Description

Fourth in my Youtuber portraits, AmazingPhil! I tried to keep a more painterly look to this one so I left brushstrokes where I didn't in the other ones, what do you guys think? I feel like it looks a lot messier. x: I think I'm going to take a break with the portraits now, I'm feeling kind of burned out with them. Maybe I'll visit it later in the year and see if I'm improved any.

I cheated with the shirt and I didn't really blend it in all that well, I'm sorry. D: It looks really ugly but I tried for so long with it and just got more and more frustrated so I give up with it.

His facial proportions were the most interesting out of any of the ones I've worked on so far, probably because everything is quirked up, down, or to the side in some slight way. I messed around with the placement of everything in this one for so long and I have SO many layers. I went through them all at the end and the progression of where everything is placed is funny to look at.

So I just went through most of your art in the "people" category, and I'd have to say that Phil and Mark are the most realistic and awesome looking out of them all, with the exception of that hilarious "Oh say CAN YOU SEEE" art XDDD

You have gotten really good at drawing glasses on people, when I saw this portrait in the small thumbnail I really thought it was a photo not a painting. Great job!

Thank you very much!! The hardest part with glasses is making sure that they are completely straight lines, they don't have any leeway with mistakes that way.

For

Okay, to begin, you asked about a painterly look in your description. To me, it still looks fairly digitalised – but then, for my part, I see a lot of ‘painterly’ works with really visible brushstrokes using textured brushes, so it’s really hard to make a work seem painterly to me XD But that also means that to me, it doesn’t look messy! There are some areas, mainly around the chin, where it looks a little rough to me, but that’s it really. Some areas of shading around the cheeks could also perhaps be blended slightly more too, but again, that’s down to how far you want to push the painterly look.

You did the placement of the quirky facial features really well! It doesn’t look off-balance or disproportionate, so kudos to you there for sure!

My main criticisms for this are with lighting. You don’t seem to have a distinct light source, though I imagine that’s likely how your reference was. Still, I feel as though some clearer highlights on the hair, particularly on the fringe, could be really effective.  I also think some more distinct shadows and highlights on the face could look good too – at the moment I don’t think you have a very wide range of values, so that could be something to look into?

I do think that the shirt looks good for the most part, but it does look a little flat, especially in comparison to the excellent rendering on the face. I think adding some shadows towards the top and some highlights towards the front to give a ‘rounded’ look could really help with the depth.

Overall though, I think you did a really good job with this one!

Hello!
I found your artwork through Project Comment and am here to comment! First off, I really like your painterly style in the way you've shaded Phil's skin, and especially in his hair. I mean, look at those highlights! If someone told me this was actually painted, I wouldn't think twice about it. Even with the strange facial proportions you've mentioned, I think you did a really good job with what you had to work with. Even the shirt looks fine. In fact, I think it adds to the illustration by contrasting against your painterly style where it meets his skin, so don't worry too much! The only thing that stands out to me is that his left nostril is a bit bigger than his right, but that might just be the way his face is angled in the actual picture. Nothing much else to say besides that. Keep up the amazing work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KokoKiero In reply to Xorsama [2016-03-27 03:37:18 +0000 UTC]

It's all from scratch, I don't trace over anything. I hate line art, so I never do it XD I can never make it look nice, so I don't have any lines or sketches or anything underneath, I just start painting. The first few layers look like a potato moreso than a human, I just keep flipping the canvas horizontally and refining it to look more like my reference photo. Then I add another layer and start painting again until it looks close to how I want it to look. This one was about 20 layers.

Two things stand out for me: the 'drawing,' realistic shapes and outlines; and the colors. I don't know if you sampled from the original image(s), or chose the colors - - - but I rather like the effect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KokoKiero In reply to Norski [2016-03-13 01:37:29 +0000 UTC]

I did sample the colours, the only ones that are of my own choosing are the shirt and the background blue. I hope by the end of the year I will be able to start choosing my own colours when doing things like this and not have them turn out really garish, but much more practice is needed before then!
