Mertwo looked over at a shelf full of books. Marissa noticed this and asked, “Would you like to read a story?” Mertwo nodded; the princess stood up, walking over to one of the shelves and pulled out a book. “This one’s my favorite. It’s called, ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Care to join me? I’ll read it to you, if you’d like.” She walked over to an elegant looking couch, sitting down as Mertwo joined her; Marissa opened the book to the first page. “Here we go.” Mertwo admired the sweeping and curling text as she began to read, “Once upon a time…”

Sometime later, before Marissa could finish the story, the both of them had fallen asleep; Marissa’s head rested against Mertwo’s neck while his head rested against hers, the book still open across her lap. The queen walked into the study, smiling as she noticed the sleeping children; Samuel came in behind her, surprised at the sight. “What on earth-?”

“Shhh. Dear, they’ve both had an exciting day today,” Delia whispered, walking over and gently taking the book, closing it and placing it back on the shelf. “Let’s let them sleep here tonight…” She looked at the peaceful looks on their faces. “It would be a shame to ruin any beautiful dreams they might be having…”

The next morning:

Mertwo slowly awakened when something was poking at his face. He opened an eye to discover it was Corstien poking him with his claw, but the sudden close up sight of him scared the prince, and he opened his mouth to yell, but nothing came out; he sat upright quickly, knocking Corstien to the floor, “Good morning, you’re Highness,” the corphish said, seeing stars for a second after falling. He shook it off and climbed back onto the couch next to Mertwo. Mertwo looked down to see that someone had put a blanket over him when he was asleep; he quickly looked around for Marissa, but could see she was no longer in the study. “Are you looking for the young lady?” Mertwo turned his eyes back to Corstien, nodding, but suddenly Corstien looked sad. “I’m afraid she has gone out for the day and won’t return until this evening, Sire.” His mouth falling open, Mertwo’s eyes grew wide, as if he was in disbelief of the situation. He moved his mouth in silence, trying to tell Corstien about the limit on the spell, but Corstien stood there looking confused. “Is there something wrong, you’re Highness?”

Mertwo nodded his head fervently, pointing to himself, then to out the window, and then held up three fingers; he was at a loss, though, of how to act out having fins…or even the sea foam part of the grim tale. However, even with all that effort, Corstien still had no clue as to what Mertwo was trying to communicate.

Frustrated and feeling a sense of hopelessness, Mertwo looked over and saw the piece of paper Marissa had laid out the night before, with the inkwell and still beside it. He threw the blanket off and ran over to the desk, dipping the quill into the ink as he sat and began to write out what he was trying to say. By the time Corstien had scuttled over and climbed up onto Mertwo’s shoulder, the prince already had most of what he was trying to tell the corphish down on the paper,

“I paid my voice and blood to get my legs so I could be with Marissa, but there’s a limit on how long I’ll stay like this: I only have three days, starting today, to try and win her heart completely or I’ll turn back into a merkin again and if I don’t make it back to the water after changing back I’ll turn into-“

Suddenly, the doors opened. Corstien, who hadn’t finished reading the note, jumped down onto Mertwo’s leg and then to the floor to hide under the desk. King Samuel entered the study with Brock at his side. “Well, good morning, my boy. You were sleeping so soundly last night that I honestly thought you’d still be asleep, but since you’re awake I can tell you now that my daughter and wife have gone ahead of myself to attend a ceremony that will be held until tonight, at which point we shall return to the castle and dine with you.” Mertwo quickly folded up the paper and stood up while Samuel spoke, leaning his back against one of the bookcases, slipping the note between a couple of books, all the while still facing the king. “I do wish that you could come…I’m sure you would enjoy the festivities, but I’m afraid that only the royal family was invited to attend, and taking another without preparation or announcement is just not the way things are done.” Mertwo had the sudden urge to roll his eyes. His father back in Altarra had said the same thing to him several times when he asked to take Finny along with him to any parties that were being held in other parts of the ocean, but this time, it was him who was not allowed to go…and he now had some idea as to how Finny felt each time it happened. Mertwo smiled a small smile, bowing slightly.

And, with that, the king turned to leave to the place his wife and daughter had gone. As soon as the door closed, Mertwo sighed and walked over to the window, staring out at the sea; he felt a chill run up his spine at the thought of Geo in that ocean. One day…he would be away from Marissa for a whole day. If something like this popped up unexpectedly again within the next two days that would keep him from Marissa…then he might as well wait by the shore to change back to his original self. Corstien had not seen any part of the note Mertwo had written, and Mertwo was too depressed to care.

An entire day…goes by agonizingly slow.

When the royal family arrived back at the castle, Marissa ran to the study and found that Mertwo wasn’t there, this didn’t really surprise her. She wondered if Mertwo was angry at her for leaving him like that without any word. Marissa had to find him, and apologize at the very least. As she walked through the castle, she ran into Brock. “Excuse me; do you know where Mertwo is?” Brock looked confused.

“Mertwo, you’re Grace?”

Marissa had forgotten that no one other than herself and her parents knew Mertwo’s name. “The boy that Father arranged a room to sleep in.”

“That’s his name?” The servant asked. “Well, I believe the young sir is in his room, but I think he’s-“ Marissa didn’t wait to hear the rest; she ran off in the direction of Mertwo’s room, leaving Brock to stand in the hall with his mouth hanging open in mid sentence. As she approached the door, she saw it was open a crack. Marissa raised a hand to knock, but could see through the opening that the room was completely dark except for a small light. Opening the door a bit, the princess peeked in and looked over at the bed; the oil lamp beside the bed was on, and in the glow of that light was Mertwo…soundly asleep with a book open and laying facedown over his lap. She opened the door more and slipped in, walking over to the side of the bed; as she gazed down at him, she noticed the glittering text on the book, it read, “Beauty and the Beast.” Marissa smiled, reaching down and gently lifting up the book, and closed it gently. She then turned and hovered her mouth over the lamp, blowing out the flame with a small puff. Before she left, she turned and looked at Mertwo one last time, hugging the book close to her chest and smiling again, quietly whispering, “Goodnight…sweet dreams.” Marissa finally turned to leave, stepping out, and closing the door gently behind her.

Next day:

Mertwo awoke bundled up in the soft sheets on his bed. He quickly got dressed, although he still had trouble with how to put on his clothes, anxious to see if Marissa had returned to the palace. Mertwo scooped Corstien, who was still asleep, and put him in his pocket; as he approached the staircase, he stopped when he saw Marissa standing at the foot of the stairs dressed in a sun dress. Dazed, his eyes still on the princess, he descended the steps to meet her.

"Good morning," she said with a smile. “Mother and Father have arranged a …um…” she blushed, “a date for us today…to make up for just leaving you alone like that yesterday.

They went off then, and spent the entire day in the local fishing village. They walked along the beach with their freshly bought ice cream cones, Marissa having her arm around Mertwo's. She was explaining about the different kinds of ice cream there were while Mertwo stared at his ice cream in confusion. He was wondering if he was supposed to eat it. Marissa saw the look on Mertwo's face and asked, "What's wrong? Do you not like chocolate?" Chocolate. That's what this was. He glanced over at Marissa, catching her eyes; Mertwo quickly looked away, blushing.

He pointed to himself and shook his head. “…..” Marissa studied his actions for a moment before realizing what he meant. “Oh my goodness...you've never had ice cream before, have you?” Again, Mertwo shook his head and Marissa looked up at him sadly. “I guess…it must be isolated where you live…I apologize if I offended you in any way.”
Mertwo only stared at her, confused but taking a cautious lick of his ice cream. To his surprise, not only was it cold, but it was one of the most delicious things he had ever tasted; immediately he began to eat it faster. Marissa watched for a moment before realizing that she hadn’t warned him about eating the ice cream too fast. The prince suddenly felt an extreme pain in his head, causing him to cringe and drop his ice cream while he moved his hands to cradle his head. Marissa giggled, “I’m sorry, I’d forgotten to say that ice cream isn’t to be eaten too fast or you’ll get what’s called a ‘brain freeze.’” Mertwo looked at her, his eyes wide. “Don’t worry; your brain isn’t really frozen. It’s just an expression.”
“This isn’t good," said Corstien as he peeked up from Mertwo’s pocket, noticing the sun setting. Mertwo didn’t hear him, and didn’t even notice that the sun had begun to set; his second day was almost over. Without hesitating, he gave Mertwo’s leg a good pinch to try and get his attention. The boy let out a silent shout of pain and surprise, accidentally falling into Marissa’s arms. Marissa blushed.

“Are you alright?” Mertwo nodded, blushing as well; he then gave his pocket a light thump. Corstien was tempted to pinch him again, but he resisted the urge. The princess giggled, releasing Mertwo. “It’s getting late…we should probably head back to the palace.”

Later, after Mertwo had changed out of his clothes, he looked outside through the window and was startled to see that it was dark. "You miss home don't you?" asked Corstien. Mertwo nodded his head, not really listening to the corphish. His second day on land was over already. Still in shock, Mertwo tried hard to imagine how the day could have just flown by so fast like it had…after all, only yesterday the day seemed to drag on forever. An overwhelming sense of sadness and helplessness came over the prince as he lay down on the bed. One more day…he only had one more day to win Marissa’s heart. As he closed his eyes, he could feel something inside of him crying out to the sea to beg for more time, but he knew that his cries were probably being rebuked and mocked.

Mertwo had no idea how right he was.

Deep down in the sea at his lair, he shell around Geo’s neck began to glow, emitting a faint voice. “I…need…more time…too soon…more…time…please…” Geo responded with his eerie cackle, slithering over to his cauldron.

“Oh my…it seems our little prince is having a bit of trouble. Can it really be that hard to win a heart?” The sorcerer chuckled. “It is nearly impossible with only three days to do so…such a pity when he really only had two, what with that outing of the royal family’s. That was an unexpected twist in my favor…” Geo gazed down into his cauldron, an image of Mertwo tossing and turning in a bed reflected on the surface. He sneered down at it, his fangs glistening in the glow of the elixirs within the cauldron. “Your highness, a deal is a deal…any extension to the time limit is simply out of the question. With only one day left...what ever will you do?” He cackled again, the sound echoing though the cavern; the sorcerer then waved his hand over the surface, and at once the image began to bubble and change. “Now, let’s check on the princess…I want to see firsthand that Mertwo has…has…” Geo stopped talking when the picture became clear. In the reflection, Marissa was standing in front of her parents. The conversation echoing from the cauldron,

“Mother, Father,” Marissa said with a smile.

“What is it, my daughter?” King Samuel asked. “I believe I’ve never seen you this happy before.”

The queen nodded, “Yes, could this have something to do with the young man staying here?”

The princess continued to smile, blushing brightly. “Yes.” She took a deep breath before continuing, “Mother…Father…I…I want to marry Mertwo!”

It was the words Geo had been dreading to hear. Surely it was impossible for someone to fall in love so quickly. This had to be just infantile love…nothing so strong as the real thing, right? He continued listening, hoping for something in his favor to arrive. If this really was true love and if Marissa was granted permission and her father’s blessing…then all it would take was just one kiss for the deal to be broken, and Geo would lose the one thing he needed to take over Altarra.

Samuel seemed shocked. “Marry?”

Delia placed her hands over her mouth, obviously excited. “Samuel, do you know what this means?”

The king nodded to his wife, a wide and beaming smile across his face. “Yes, indeed I do. It means…that our daughter has finally chosen a suitor!” Marissa giggled, still blushing. “Well, dear daughter, as long as the young lad agrees to court you until you are wed, I give you my full blessing to-“ The image roughly disappeared when Geo slammed his fist into the cauldron’s contents, his rage evident.

“No…NO! I CAN’T LOSE!” He took a deep breath, his gills fluttering raggedly. “And Mertwo is sure to not object…and he is sure enough to kiss her once he hears the news! That’s it…this has gone on long enough!” The serpent slithered over to the shelf filled with ingredients and potions; quickly, he began to take one vial after another and throw them, glass and all, into the cauldron. As the cauldron began to boil the ingredients together, Geo carefully took down the vial that held the most important ingredient…Mertwo’s blood. With a hiss, he threw the vial into the boiling contents; a bubble immediately surrounded his body and his form began to change.
The cavern filled with a bright light and a thick cloud of smoke. Geo’s maniacal laughter soon began to change along with his form.

“I will not lose...not if I can put a stop to it!!”

Up at the surface…

While Mertwo slept uneasily, and as the moon rose high into the night sky, Marissa walked along the beach. She was too excited to sleep. The very idea of marrying Mertwo made her heart and thoughts race, already planning out their wedding. Marissa smiled. “I haven’t even asked him yet…and yet I feel like I already know what he’ll say. I’m so happy…” She stopped when she heard a voice in the distance, looking around for the sound. Turning her eyes toward the sea, she could see a figure walking up out of the water…singing to her. As she gazed, the figure came closer to her and she recognized him immediately; when the stranger approached her, she did not run or question the identity, and the princess found herself transfixed in his eyes… a haze seemed to cloud her thoughts. Something wasn’t right…

As the stranger leaned in, gazing at her intensely, Marissa’s eyes became dull as she allowed herself to be kissed by this stranger. When he pulled away after a mere moment, he whispered to her, “I am…Mertwo.”

Marissa repeated softly, her voice void of any emotion, “You are Mertwo…”

The next morning…

Corstien paced the bed, waiting for Mertwo to wake up. Mertwo only had today to win Marissa’s heart, even though he already, yet unknowingly, had done so and only needed to kiss her at this point. There was a tapping noise coming from the window, and Corstien looked over to see a wingull eagerly pecking at the glass. “Open up! I got news to share!” The corphish glanced at Mertwo, who was still asleep, and sighed; he jumped down off the bed and climbed up onto ledge. Upon getting up there, Corstien could see that the window was ajar and only had to tap at the loose panel with a claw for it to open. The wingull entered immediately, beaming down at the small pokémon. “The name’s Benny!”

“Great great…” Corstien said in a hushed voice. “Could you keep it down?” He pointed a claw at Mertwo. “Can’t you see he’s still asleep-“

“HEY! IT’S MERTWO THE FISHBOY!” Benny yelled happily. Corstien flinched, confused. Did Mertwo know this bird? Suddenly, the wingull flapped his wings and landed on the bed beside Mertwo. “How’d you get up here on land? I thought you couldn’t walk ‘cause of that tail of yours?” He peeked his head under the blanket. “Well, whad’ya know? You’ve got yourself a pair’a legs! Still got your tail too. Boy, did you make out like a bandit in that deal-“

Mertwo began moving, opening his eyes drowsily. He looked down to see tail feathers peeking out from under his blanket. Mertwo sat up and looked over in time to see Corstien climbing up the blankets to set on the bed; the prince reached down and helped the corphish up onto the bed. He opened his mouth to talk, but remembered…again…that he no longer had his voice. Instead, Corstien spoke for him. “Er…Benny, was it? What news were you talking about earlier?”
