Darth is not always an opportunist A-hole.He took Titan in when he was still an egg, and even if his reasons back then were misguided, he helped raising him way before they became team partners. On some level, he still has that pseudo-parental instincts kicking in and show the younger Larvitar a deeper affection.
Even if it's just a layer of blanket after a hard day's work.
