Description I remember reading the issue of X-Men where Storm went punk and I was so shocked I almost stopped reading comics I was so mad. Years later the look grew on me and now I wish they would have kept her that way.

Here is my take on that classic look.

I agree, it was a shocking setup, but Claremont made it work so well! this looks perefct!

Yeah it was interesting because he dug deep into the characters durian that era. Wolverine became the samurai rogue a hero and Storm a punk. It was a great time for those characters.

so true, it was the best time to be an X-fan. Plus it was simple to keep up with the stories, which I can't do because of their being to many X-Comics right now.

You are so right way too many books with way too many alternating creative teams. I don't know what to collect because it's all over the map. They are amazing characters they just need to focus on their personalities and not on these huge stories that don't mean anything to people.

Chadfuller In reply to KomicKarl [2012-01-19 01:49:39 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't agree more. It's just seems to be about who will draw the next book for 3-issues before the next artist comes aboard and then the next writer who got bored after two issues. I miss the good old days where I could actually know what was going on in the movie universe and Secret Wars was as big as it got.

It really is a mess. I wish they would turn back the clock on those books they were awesome during that era.

yeah, that would be great. Sadly they and DC as well seem to be hooked on creating huge "52" style crossovers for every comic title on the planet and having each character with 3 or more books! How many books does Wolverine and Spider-man need?

This look and her original design are her most iconic (everything since has just been derivative variations of either) and I'm diggin' your take here.

KomicKarl In reply to stalk [2012-01-13 01:46:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I agree. It's like both ends of the spectrum. The OG and the punk work as a good way to show her evolution as a character.

That's always been one of my favourite looks for her. And when she had no powers, it just made her even more of a bad-ass.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KomicKarl In reply to Treyos [2012-01-12 22:52:41 +0000 UTC]

It really gave her a more fragile look in some ways. More human. The BWS stories in Africa and with Forge are fantastic.

Treyos In reply to KomicKarl [2012-01-13 14:27:35 +0000 UTC]

The Storm-Forge relationship was a great one and that era, in general, had some of the most creative stories in X-Men history.

I remember how much we both hated it when they did that. You were livid if I remember correctly. I think you were about to drop X-Men all together after that LOL!

I also had a fit when Paul Smith took over. I was down for Dave Cockrum like a mofo. Then I was pissed when Romita Jr. took over. Actually I'm still pissed about that. Ha!!!

Did you pick up the new Miller Holy Terror? I'd like to hear your opinion of it.

MikeHaff In reply to KomicKarl [2012-01-12 03:53:46 +0000 UTC]

No, I really have not even been in a comic store in a long time. I'm getting to the point though where I plan on rebuilding the artist runs I liked from the old days. Ya know Byrne X-Men, FF, Avengers, Simonson, Miller, Golden, etc... It will be slow and expensive but worth it. I regret getting rid of all that back in the day.

Know of any stores that are great for back issues like this as well as new stuff like you're talking about?

The Cockrum stuff WAS good wasn't it? I don't think I ever fully appreciated him until way after the fact.

I'm supposed to have dinner with Michael when he comes to town. You should come with me. He's a really cool guy. Lots on interesting thoughts on art etc.

Cockrum is under rated IMHO. His work was clean and had a lot of emotion. Think of all the cool characters he created.

I know a couple of retailers with big back issues. If you need something let me know I can put you together with them. There are also a couple guys at Frank and Sons that have good collections.

This is pretty cool an over sized reprint of all the original art from Simonson's Thor issues. Fantastic stuff. Here is a link to it. [link]

Did you see Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Very dark and twisted.

Oh wow! That would truly be a treat indeed! I would love the opportunity to meet one of my childhood/adulthood art heroes!

I think I'm gonna go crazy with my tax return this year and blow it all on back issues of X-Men. So somtime in March I think I will most def ask you about your retailer suggestions for sure.

Cockrum was probably the first artsit I think I really noticed when I first picked up a comic from the corner liquor store off the "spinner" rack. I think it was X Men # 99. Is that the one where the Sentinels have them trapped in these bubbles in space? LOL! Dug the hell outta that!

I checked that Simonson book...WOW. Not cheap LOL!
You have it? It must be amazing seeing the art at that size...

Loved Dragon Tattoo.
Fincher is amongst my fave directors in that I feel like he, James Cameron, Nolan and Ridley Scott can do no wrong in my mind. They have very clear visions of what they want to see as the final product and will make sure it happens, even if it mean pissing more than a few people off. The final product is well worth it. I like Tattoo even more than the Swedish versions. Not that I have any aversion to subtitles, I just like the cinematography and director of photography that Fincher uses. A Fincher film has a very distinct look to me.

KomicKarl In reply to MikeHaff [2012-01-12 23:13:53 +0000 UTC]

Cockrum was really my first X-Men artist and it wasn't till later that Byrne became by fave. Pretty much when I bought that Dark Phoenix trade. Up until that point most of the art looked the same to me. Paul Smith was really different to me. He is one of my faves but it took me a long time to appreciate his work.

I don't have the Thor book. I've been deciding between that and the Thor Omnibus. Even though the Omnibus is cool it's been recolored by Steve Oliff the computer coloring I think take away the original art. When you all the originals in the artist edition it's a trip how big the line are. Thick chunky lines. It's fun to look at. They also have an artist version of the OG Rocketeer issues. Both very nice.

As for Dragon Tattoo...wow what a great piece of art. I kept thinking about it for days after. It was disturbing but the style and execution and character building was off the charts. I agree it really out classed the Swedish versions. Also Fincher's take on Lisbeth was so different and unique. I don't know if I've ever seen a character that had so many different dimensions. Fascinating character study.

Are you hyped for Prometheus? I agree Ridley, Nolan, Fincher, Cameron. The good stuff.

It has a loose Shirow feel which I think is really fun to look at. If he drew faces that were more mainstream this guy would be huge..or at least bigger than he is.

MikeHaff In reply to KomicKarl [2012-01-16 04:21:27 +0000 UTC]

I kinda wanna see him tighten up a little, and yes you're right, maybe more defined faces. But his sense of dynamics and movement is great!

KomicKarl In reply to MikeHaff [2012-01-16 05:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I agree. The storytelling is great but sometimes I get lost in the amount of brush work and tones on the page. I think there could be a balance of energy and bit of draftsmanship. That being said..it's a 1000x more interesting than anything Marvel or DC are doing. lol

Is it really that bad with the big 2 these days? That's so crazy. Do see anything like another crash coming? It seems like I hear whispers of an ailing industry sometimes.....I'd love to see this guy let you throw down some inks to give his look some cohesion and definition.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KomicKarl In reply to MikeHaff [2012-01-17 02:18:36 +0000 UTC]

I think it's pretty bad. It's evolved into a corner idea wise. Also the fact that the big two are owned by big corporations just makes the print side even less important. It's all about how can they exploit the library. Which I don't blame them for. It just means looking to the big two for innovation or something new is the wrong place to look. That era is over.

MikeHaff In reply to KomicKarl [2012-01-17 18:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess you can't "blame the animal for following it's instincts" but it is kind of lame that they're no longer a source of innovation like way back.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KomicKarl In reply to MikeHaff [2012-01-17 18:52:00 +0000 UTC]

Part of the problem is that comics used to have an edge over other media in terms of visuals, scale and imagination. Now any cut scene from a video game looks like a high end movie and can realize visually what can only be hinted at with 2D art. That's why trying to compete with Super Heroes is a losing idea. I think it's all about story..and always has been. Good stories with great art..it's the formula that never gets old. Add in some diverse subject matter and you have recipe for reaching new audience.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MikeHaff In reply to KomicKarl [2012-01-17 19:09:46 +0000 UTC]

That's a good summary Karl.
Sounds like a moot point to compete with what the industry has as a formulaic approach to the genre now.

I have been most impressed by Christopher Nolan and PIXAR. They both start from a strong concept which seems like it gets a strong script treatment before any visual is realized.
That kind of approach really shows in the final product.
The care that goes into their craft is apparent when I see this final product in theaters and it is both seamless and made to look so simple in it's flow of storytelling elements. Like INCEPTION and FINDING NEMO. While vastly different, they both contain all the classic 3 parts to tell a story, whether it's a comic, novel, or film.

KomicKarl In reply to MikeHaff [2012-01-18 01:58:27 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Nolan is fantastic. It's that singular vision man. Having someone who has an idea and the vision and skills to make it happen. The creativity by committee always seems to undermine things. Look at Cameron they say he is an Ahole but you know when you see one of his movies that what you see on screen is what he wanted you to see.

If I don't know the person, I don't care if they're a an a hole or not. If the complete vision is represented and kicks ass, that's all I care about. Not like I'm gonna hang out with Cameron or Nolan ever right? LOL! Just watch their movies over and over over, dissecting and digesting every aspect about it. I find new love for INCEPTION every time I watch it. Def one of my all time fave movies.
Something to be said of vision. That must be an amazing feeling to control your own reality by drawing a comic book for your self first. All of that world you have created within your own rules.

That was a really nice article. I look forward to seeing what he produces now that he will be free to do "Art House" stuff. It seems like people tend to give him a lot of crap, but he never said that most of that stuff he did for the big studios were not Popcorn flicks. His fan base is a huge contingent of varied opinion for sure. Never going to please everyone all the time.
I'll definitely see Red Tails.

Really it's Me2 the TV show pitch and ECB the hobby comic and another TV pitch I'm working on that is linked to a toy and app.

The WWII idea is on the back burner. I'm focusing mostly on Me2. I don't play video games I make comics in my spare time. ha!

The main reason I loved this design (despite growing up with Silver Storm from the early 90's) is because it gave Storm an interesting and defined personality. Back when I was actually reading X-Men on a regular basis, her personality had diminished so far into "mother figure" that the punk look really stood out to me as something fun to read. ^^

That's a great point. At least it gave her an edge and a dramatic angle on her character. You are right she had turned into a bit of a gold character.
