Description The Flower Sprite is a creature of the Goblin kingdom. They hang out amongst flowers, with their mouths open waiting for an insect to land. They have a number of glands in their mouths that emit a scent similar to pollen to attrack insects and multiple proboscis they uses to consume the insect. You can see more about the Flower Sprite in my upcoming book 'Fleming's Field Guide to North America Goblins.' This image, among others, can be seen in my newly released 2010 calendar on lulu.com. As with my other Goblins this little critter was created in Photoshop using a technique I pioneered, which will be the topic of one of my upcoming Photoshop books. I wanted to create a new technique for quickly rendering realistic fantasy characters and I'm pleased to say it works very well.

You can see more of his goblin friends here [link]

IT'S PAINTED!!!!
Just for the record, the flowers are painted not photomanipulation I get a lot of questions abut this piece when I submit as painted so I gave in and submitted as a photomanipulation at times.

AMAZING!!!

I've always wanted flowers to come to life when I was a little girl ...
think I get that thought from the roses & pansies in Cinderella..

this one looks amazing yet creepy at the same time

fantastic job

But I meant with eyes and arms and mouths and that sort of thing.
My bad for making mistakes.

Thank you!

When I was a child my mother would take me into the woods and tell me stories of fairies and sprites. I think flowers coming to life is a cool thing

Thanks again. I wanted the Flower Sprites to be beautiful, yet menacing.

you're welcome

( Cinderella ? I meant Alice in Wonderland .. )
not sure what I was thinking lol

yes , I had stories of nymphs and sprites and faeries too
they made the flowers that much better

you're welcome keep up the good work

I figured it was Alice - wonderful fantasy environments! It's good you had the stories. I walk about 5 miles a day and explore the wilderness for inspiration. I let my imagination run wild and try to see everything as a living being. As an example, I was quite pleased with my Rubble Goblin as he is entirely comprised of rocks I discovered on my walks.

five miles .. I'm exhausted at the thought lol
but , when out with nature it's easy to loose track
of time and just wander for ages ..

very cool on the rubble goblin

I do about 150-200 miles a month of wandering - lol It is easy to lose track of time. I'd be out there all day if I didn't have work to do. Glad you like the Rubble Goblin

wow that's a lot .. you must be fit as a fiddle

I NEED to go out walking more ... but I'm just too damn lazy
more like , I'm stuck walking with just my son whom is almost 3 yrs old
and that's fine , but I rather walk with someone I can chat to on my own
level instead of just nonsense lol

KomodoEmpire In reply to jodipheonix [2010-07-15 18:05:51 +0000 UTC]

We'll, a fiddle with a few broken stings anyway - lol

I go walking with my kids a lot. They are older now but when they were young it was certainly intersting. Their fertile imaginations really helped fuel mine. Even when i walk with adults I think the conversations still lean towards nonsense

nothin wrong with a few broken strings lol

very true .. guess I'm just overly lazy lol
which is all the strings broken and the fiddle too

KomodoEmpire In reply to jodipheonix [2010-07-16 17:47:28 +0000 UTC]

You could always be fit as a harmonica - no stings to break and they're pretty tough You know it takes a lot of motivation to walk that much, particularly since around here it's now 100+. It's getting hard to operate the camera with sweaty fingers - lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jodipheonix In reply to KomodoEmpire [2010-07-16 23:13:34 +0000 UTC]

never thought of harmonicas ..

yeah I know what you mean. the best time here
for walks is spring and autumn they're the only
seasons with a happy medium in temps ..
winter is a bit too cold and summer is rediculous
always 120+ here in summer

KomodoEmpire In reply to jodipheonix [2010-07-17 05:32:39 +0000 UTC]

lol I'm pretty much used to the 100+ temps since I spent so many years doing research in the desert. I was a Herpetologist for many years and spent most of my time running around the desert chasing critters.

sounds very fun
you'd have a blast here ..
it's so dry a lot of the paddocks (fields)
here are desert or desert-like and have
all sorts of weird wonderful critters in them

I've actually spent a good deal of time in Australia chasing things I used to make a trip there every year. I've been to Cairns, Perth, Brisbane and Alice Springs. I spent a lot of time in the Simpson, Tanami and Great Sandy deserts chasing reptiles It's been years since I've been there and I really need to get back.

I've been to Brisbane and a few towns surrounding there
that are just gorgeous , but that was about 4 years ago
haven't been back up there.
I live in Victoria , and must say though people only
ever hear about Melbourne , the rest of the state is
quite beautiful

you should come back , it's a whole other world here

I really enjoyed Brisbane. I've not been to Victoria yet but heard it was nice. I definitely need to get back there. I plan to make a trip next year for the Australian edition of my Goblin field guide series. I need to get local reference for making the critters

Do you have online tutorial for this technique?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KomodoEmpire In reply to The-Hand [2010-06-14 18:57:19 +0000 UTC]

Actually I do. It's part of a new book I'm writing. After years of working with publishers I have decided to self-publish the new books so I can make them accessible and affordable. They will be in print and e-book editions and way less expensive.

Actually no but I love that movie. Brian's design work for that movie was awesome. Back when I started doing 3D animation Brian Froud was a great inspiration for my Goblin work. My work has evolved into a new area since then but I'm still a fan of Brian's work.

Thanks! I was walking by those flowers one day and the idea just struck me. I have a section on Sprites in my new Goblin book and the premise for them is they all have to blend with their environment. It's challenging but fun

This one in particular was a bit of work because, in spite of what many think, the flowers are not photomanipulation but rather painted. I actually have to submit it as photomanipulation to get it inot some galleries!
