This is the Groveback, a massive turtle-like creature from the fictional planet of Darwin 4.

They are the largest land animals on Darwin 4, standing over fives stories tall. They are two-legged but have a rudder-like leg they use for balance that is dragged along behind them. They have a semi-circle shaped head and two enormous nostrils.

The Grovebacks bury themselves for long periods of time to feed on the nutrients in the soil. Once they have absorbed all of the nutrients in on spot, the Groveback rises and begins searching for new feeding grounds. If they are forced to travel long distances, the Groveback can filter feed, feeding on the microscopic plants and animals that number in the millions in Darwin IV's air currents, allowing them to sustain themselves until they reach their destination.

Because of the long periods they lie dormant underground, they have saplings growing on their back, which inject sugars into the creature. The Groveback gives the trees water in return.

Due to their enormous size, they fear virtually nothing. Only the diminutive Beach Quills are known to hunt these behemoths.
