Description {Towards the end of the Great War, Vale was in need of a new rifle for combat use against both Grimm and humans, as their swords were proven to be ineffective against Atlesian ranged firepower. With the exception of the battle of Vacuo, most battles seemed to be a war of atrition against Mistral and Mantle forces.

After this, they still stuck to bows and Dust crossbows as well as leftover battle rifles from overrun Mistral and Mantle bases. However, these battle rifles did no good for the Valean huntsmen, militias, and pseudomilitaries, as proven by the Faunus Rights Revolution.

However, thanks to an intrepid ex-Mantle dissident gunsmith named Richard Kalashtonerikov and his wife Nonna Garaenfield, who copied the more useable and advanced Type 68 rifle used by Atlesian militaries, this new design was chosen: the Prototype 333.

Prot. 333 was essentially a battle rifle with 20 round magazine. It was made using heavy metals donated by Vacuo from old SDC mines. This proved to be the rifles advantage, and there was a war going on in some islands near Menagerie between Mistral, who somehow allied with the island, and the Schnee Dust Company, where the gun could be tested. Prot. 333 was finalized, with a gas powered blowback and a 7.62mm cartridge as the Mark 183 Rifle.

The war, known as the Southern Dust War, proved at first advantageous to the long range of the M183, that even Faunus given the surplus rifles approved of it. In the early years of the war, when such antarctic terrain was suitable for brutal trench warfare, it was used as the standard Valean rifle alongside the Mark 76 SMG, as well as also by Faunus privateers, who used them throughout the war. `
However, in the more temperate,coastside,and tropical parts of the Archipelago, such as Place Y7, Ghira Rock, Beowolf Pass and the most infamous being Kittiwake Island, such firefights occurred when the enemy was within 300-100 yards. This gave the Atlesians and Mistral People's Militia to be successful in defending key points, to the part where in Beowolf Pass, 3,299 soldiers were ambushed by the Cing Cong, the guerilla corps of the MPM and trained by former Ace Operatives, and only 40 remained, simply by using leftover Type 68Ms, which were lighter than their Valean rivals.

The Type 68Ms were delivered to the Kalashtonerikov factory and examined; it seemed that Atlesian rifles now used 6.77mm leaded ammunition instead, as well as stamped sheet metal for lighter costs.

As such, the now aging inventor set to work, creating the Mark 183A1, which was light, powerful, and most of all, did not go bananas when put at full auto, as well as a larger banana mag, holding 30 rounds. It's still a powerful Grimm killing machine, in fact, one huntress by the name of Ruby Rose has a working paper model of one in her room back at Patch, and many of these machines are used to train Beacon Hunters who have not gone to a combat school aka Basic Training. It is the rifle credited for essentially winning the Southern half of the Dragon Islands, which after the war was divided between Atlas and the Allied forces thanks to a Tridemilitarized Zone.
(Fun fact, despite being the ones invaded, the Remnant Allies, particularly Menageriean corsairs and marines, committed the most atrocities.)

The Mark 183A4 and Mark 4 carbine are in use by Vale militias today, mostly thanks to Ozpin secretly arming them, as part of the Patch Compromise. They are also popular with Vacuan and Menagerie troops and corsairs, however Mistral quit using them thanks to being blockaded by Atlas. They now use the Type 84M assault rifle.}

RWBY by Rooster Teeth,

Overall rifle design and history belongs to me, with the inspirations being the M14, M16, and AK-47.
