Description Home again! This time from Turku city Went there for a concert by this Finnish band called Scandinavian Music Croup (SMC for shorter name).

I want to ask something that haves nothing to do with the photo there, but I've been wondering for some time now... Music on the concert really moved me. The vocalist singed beautifully, the band sounded great and the mood was truly something special. But any of those things wouldn't have worked that great without those poetic and yet so heart aching lyrics of the songs, which will lead to my question; what does Finnish language sound to you? I've heard so many times that Finnish language sounds like cursing, that there must be some truth to the statement... true or false?
To help the judging here is one of my many favorite songs from the above mentioned band called "Vieläkö soitan banjoa?" [link] and other song "Lautturi" (yet another favorite of mine. Gorgeous video too!) by Finnish band called PMMP [link] ^^

nice shot with a delicate color

and about your question..hehe)
i think you won't be surprised that i've never heard of such a band. i'm listening to this song now. Actually, i've almost never listened to music like this, so it seems to me very unusual. It has nice melody and i like vocal too. And about finnish language, i've never even thought that someone could think that it sounds like cursing. I don't know why, but for me it sounds very similar to japanese language.
i know some finnish bands, but they play music of absolutely different kind, mostly various sorts of metal.
i like music of many styles. so i like these songs too. they're very relaxing and melodic i think

Thank you!

Yeah, I'm not surprised that you haven't heard of these bands. There's certainly some language barrier for them to succeed outside of Finland. But then again PMMP and SMG sell much more records here than HIM, The Rasmus or Nightwish does. Not that I have nothing against those bands (particularly Nightwish), but they tend to sound more American than Finnish (particularly Rasmus and HIM), which is a sound I'm not personally that into.
Japanese? That doesn't sound bad at all
By the way if you can get past the language barrier and really do like all sort of music styles, I truly recommend getting your hands on any of the never albums of PMMP (only the first cd weren't that great, although it also had some fantastic songs). They have done some truly moving ballads [link] insane party songs [link] aggressive punk [link] depressing disco (not official music video, thank goodness) [link] and songs that could only be described as PMMP pop [link] layList&=5CF5542477CD2443&laynext=1&laynext_fromL&index=10, to name the few. And now I'm going to stop before I start to sound like a total fan boy. Damn, too late.

Kiitos kiitos, toivomma että joku päivä joitakin näistä
meitin otoksista saa ostettua jostakin postikortteina ^^
iskee parhaiten tuollainen SMG:n tyyppinen heleä suomipop.

Beautiful piece! I love the soft colors and tones, yet how warm it feels at the same time. It gets a little noisy at times, but good focus and composition! We must be psychic - I posted a rose close-up today as well ^^

For your question: when they're singing, it sounds very harmonious and soft, but the announcer on the second vid (for PMMP) did sound like he was swearing I think it really depends on how you speak a language - some find Mandarin to be very hard to stomach, but I quite like its melodious quality and the fun sounds. And Taiwanese is extremely soft-sounding. Yeah, I think a lot depends on how you speak a language.

Haha, thanks again Katherine! Our minds must be connected Can't wait to check out that rose of yours!

You're so right about the announcer, even I can somehow hear the swearing, but then again it's his job to grab your attention
To me every language is interesting to listen to, particularly when singed. I listen a lot of music from different countries and it really doesn't matter to me that I don't understand what they are saying; I can still understand the emotions and moods each song transfers. In a way it's sad that English language have become so popular, because many of the more obscure languages are dying from its way.
What's even more sad to me is that there's so many artists and bands that are somewhat "emotionally unavailable" to those who doesn't speak the language they are singing. I'm not so sure that I would love Scandinavian Music Croup this much if I couldn't understand them. And if little country like Finland haves gems like SMC and PMMP, who knows what else is there...
Thanks for the comment. It was really interesting to hear opinion on this matter from some one who speaks French By the way do you have any French artists/bands you want to recommend?

marshmallow-pies In reply to Korpinkynsi [2009-05-26 18:32:28 +0000 UTC]

That is very true... The music's tone and the human voice can charge a piece with emotion and communicate just as well as with good lyrics. Still, I don't know, I do like being able to understand a song's lyrics, it makes the experience so much richer for me (but that's because I'm very language-oriented anyways). I think it's much better when people can speak more than one language - it makes us more tolerant and understanding of other cultures.
I actually think that the French music scene is fairly, um, honestly, crap these days. It's very generic and poppy in quite a few ways... Edith Piaf of course is above and beyond all that though, and she really is my favorite French singer. Otherwise...
I quite like Bénabar, but there you do need to understand the lyrics to enjoy the songs since he couples a certain atmosphere via the music, and then can totally subvert that with the song - he's more of a comedian who does his shows in musical form
I do like Renan Luce as well.
Oh, Calogéro has a voice for sure.
Jennifer satisfies any craving I may have for French pop (her recent stuff isn't too bad - her early work... I prefer not to speak of it )
Zazie has some good stuff as well.
I'm out of artists So there, feel free to check them out!

Aloha For the photograph: *gg

For your question:
I am listening to the first song right now and I like it!
I think every language can sound "cursing" if you use it that way. The song I am listening at the moment isn't "cursing" at all. I don't know its kind of a "goodbye" ...thats what it sounds like to me (but I don't know *gg). The girls have such wonderful voices. Sounds great
German language is also called to be very hard... I don't think much about it. In the end its always a personal opinion. Many people say french sounds nice and soft. It doesn't for me ...I like the nordic languages. Like the sound and feel of it. I'm not sure if its much of a analogy but I like joik music alot.

Thank you Benita

I'm so glad that you like song ^^ You guessed it right, the song is about goodbye. This is what they roughly say in it:

"The forest is burning behind the border
I'm just asleep
In the morning there's smoke on the streets
And the sun shrinks

You left for Paris
Said you were happy
The girl is beautiful and friendly
I hate her

Nobody is waiting for me
Why would I rise
Before a new sleep
You call after all

I lost you a long time ago
You pulled your shoulders up to your ears and walked away
This morning you want to forget it
Perhaps to be like we were before
You ask me if I've cut my hair
If I've changed
If I still play the banjo
At night after the dark
If I still play the banjo
At night after the dark

I sold my banjo away
As early as last winter
But I still sing
Listen carefully

This is the last song
That I'll sing to you
It's name is "too much,
too late"

I lost you a long time ago..."

It's always fun to share favorite bands and songs with one other. Do you have any German artists/bands you want to recommend?
I also like nordic languages somewhat more, but that probably wouldn't be the case if I would live in America for example. It's all about what we are used to hear, even though it's always good to broaden one's horizons. If the music is good, then the language it's singed doesn't really matter

yeah *gg guessed right
Thanks for the translation

Its true that its interesting to share music. ...I need to think a bit about it... as many German bands sing in English... One I really like is: Silbermond irgendwas bleibt
oh oh oh... just stumbled over a band I nearly forgot : Wir sind Helden nur ein Wort & Aurellie (unfortunately no official video)

Okay... hope thats not to much... He is very popular at the moment in Germany
Peter Fox alles neu & Haus am See

Please tell me what you think

beautiful photo

SMC's vocalist certainly doesn't sound like she's cursing or anything... How a language sounds pretty much depends on who speaking and how they are speaking, but Finnish does strikes me as a language fit for swearing (though, I didn't really hear much Finnish outside of several songs)... I heard Polish is very harsh and 'suit for cursing' as well (and it is true), but someone else told me it really melodic and nice (i guess this can be true... sometimes)... so it depends how you use it

Korpinkynsi In reply to aki-o [2009-05-26 18:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, I guess you're right. It's probably not about what language you communicate with, more like how you actually do it. So even we Finnish people still have some hope
Thanks for the comment!
