Description
One of my friends asked me to draw Naruto for him a while back, so here it is! ^^I haven't watched Naruto but might get around to it someday. Not sure haha~
(Trust me, I know the hair is trash. I just have no idea how to shade spikes like wtf XD)

Hello there! I'm here on behalf of and I'll be giving you the best critique I am able! I'll admit upfront a slight bias: I really am not a Naruto fan. However, I'll do my best to put that aside so that I can give you a thorough and helpful critique. 
First, the positive, the detail on the teeth is really nice! Ok, that seems like a small thing, but it's just the first thing that popped out at me. I also rather like the detail on the zipper, the lighting on the ring around the hood, how strong the lighting on the eyes are (you wouldn't believe how many people just don't bother to put light on the eyes!) and the effort you put into making his metal head plate look more like metal. All of these things show you put a lot of effort into the piece, and you should be very proud of that indeed! You also definitely have some sense of contrast in lighting, which is a strong skill, and I do hope you keep that up.
I think the first thing that grabs my attention in a less than stellar way is the hair. I know Naruto has... erm, difficult hair to decipher, to be honest. I won't say "stupid hair" because I'm trying not to be biased here. Anyway, I get that this is a bit more of a challenge, but I think there are better ways to approach the hair. You kind of shaded it twice, once for detail and once in a more basic anime style. I think either could have worked on their own, but together they just look sort of messy and cluttered. I think there's a way you could combine the detail shading with the simple anime shading into a more detailed cell-shading method, or perhaps just abandon it entirely and go for realism, but this midway point just... doesn't quite look right. I also think that... well, you did the shading in all black and gray, didn't you? That isn't a bad starting point, but adding some color to the shadows will make your artwork much more dynamic in the future.
I feel like you're working very hard to make this picture work, and that alone tells me you're going to be a great artist one day. I think you're at a midpoint between styles here, perhaps, and maybe you should look into experimenting more, trying new ideas, and seeing what sticks with you. Best of luck! Aw thank you so much! I'm really glad that you liked it! Yeah I've never watched Naruto yet so I don't know if I'll ever actually like it or not haha. But yeah I agree about the hair. I just had no idea how to go about shading spikes of hair. It was really off putting. But trust me, these days I never use black and grey to shade anymore since this was made back in March haha. Its now become something that I tell people not to do after sort of learning my lesson with it~

Well, if you like Shonen, you'll probably like it well enough. It's pretty standard shonen... it's just REALLY not my thing, since I like shorter series that are more unique. Spikes of hair are definitely weird, though I usually just sort of shade them in groups, like small amounts of hair all going in the same direction. It's a bit difficult though, and well, eventually you'll find a way that works. But that in-between time is the woooooorst.
XD Good to hear the shading is improving for ya! It's one of those things a lot of free art stuff doesn't tell you... but it's so important. Haha...

Haha well I'll have to check it out someday. I've honestly always doubted that I would like it, which is why I never started it sooner. I felt as if the only character I would really like is Kakashi and that's it XD
But thanks haha ^^ Yeah if you use colors to shade with it really makes things pop and give it some life, so I try to always use it now.

Is Dragon Ball Z and such considered a shonen? Since I'm not 100% sure on what a shonen is haha. DBZ and Naruto have always seemed really similar to me for some reason so what you said would make sense if they were both shonens haha.

Shonen is basically any manga that has a primary target audience of elementary school to high school boys. So yeah, Dragon Ball, Fairy Tale, Soul Eater, Pokemon technically, etc. While I like Pokemon because it's my childhood, I find these series tend to go on and on forever. xD

Haha yeah I kind of hate it when anime episodes start getting into the hundreds like Goddd. I checked out Soul Eater and didn't like it too much, but I was thinking of possibly giving it another try just because of a character in it that I like haha. I was also gonna check out Fairy Tale because I heard it was good, but I don't really know.

Yeah I haaaate when anime go on forever, like... even if I like an anime enough to watch that much, who has that kinda time? You have to have kept up with them since the beginning to even remotely keep up. It's not like most of these shonen pieces are masterworks anyway.... the only one I felt like I could really keep watching forever is Hunter X Hunter (the new version).

Yeah I can't handle it when animes start going on that long, though regular TV shows are kind of different for me XD Like I'm watching shows that are on season 13 and 12 right now so I can't say anything about that haha.

I tend to not really do the same thing unless they're like, reality shows, where there isn't really a plot and it's more about the subject matter. Regular TV shows like House or whatever, I've watched multiple seasons, but that's more because they're a show I like to watch when I'm sick, or when I'm having a bad day, etc.

So first off I have to say Wow! To draw the character so good and you've never even seen the anime is amazing I think! If you do ever see it, I recommend watching it in Japanese with the subtitles in English. I know you can watch it on Hulu but you have to pay. Here's a website that you can watch it for free on www4.naruspot.tv/ and I haven't gotten any viruses or anything from the website so that's good. I think the two websites use different translators so you'd get a slightly different feel from each of the English subtitles but it is so worth it to listen to it in Japanese. ^^ Okay, now on to the actual artwork. It is fantastic! The only two things I can see that can be improved are parts of the zipper which are in the dark fold areas, I feel like the zipper should be a bit darker in those areas too, and the spot of blood on his face I feel like is almost in a different style to the rest of the piece, because it is smudgy and not as defined. Oh, one more thing, the small spike, the third from the left, I think it could have been a completed spike instead of making the end disappear like that. I don't think that the hair looks like trash! I think it looks pretty cool, I like all the little glowing bits.

I have a good site to watch it on called Kissanime actually, but thanks for the suggestion! ^^ I have a list of a ton of animes so I feel like it'll take me a while to get around to it because of how long it is haha. Also good eye on the zipper parts. I can't believe I didn't darken those lmao. I definitely agree with you on the hair spike as well now that I look at it. The thing about the blood is that I tried to keep it more defined, but it ended up looking really bad. So I just smudged it instead and it came out a bit better. Shading hair is a pain to say the least. I am not going to lie to you, I hate shading hair. That smoke effect you got going on is dope man. Loving the texture you put in the Leaf Village head band.
