Sherlock's cutie mark is supposed to be a question mark, because he's obviously good at solving problems.

Mycroft's cutie mark is an umbrella. Not only because it’s what he carries around, but because umbrellas offer protection, which I think is a talent of his that we’re going to be seeing more of.

When I draw ponies of characters, I try to find a pony on the show that they are most like, and then use that pony's design to base the new character's off of. For instance, Sherlock is mostly based on Princess Luna. With Mycroft, I did something a little different. His attitude and the way he carries himself on the show remind me of several Disney characters, one being Maximus the Horse from Tangled. So that's why he has thinner legs and different colored hooves than my other ponies (I gave Sherlock the same hooves to give them some sort of family resemblance).
