"FREEZE!"

Katara's heart jumped to her throat. Fear, anguish, and shock all mixed painfully within her stomach, rendering her numb. Zuko's eyes displayed no surprise. Sighing sadly he remained still, standing before her. Katara closed the space between them, trying to hold on to him. He made a small attempt to hold her.

"I had wished they had shown up later..." He muttered, just barely enough for her to catch.

The guards of the caravan circled them, all of them quickly making way towards her and her ex-savior. Hands grabbed at hers and his, pulling each other away. She gasped, trying to pull against them.

"No!" She exclaimed. The two neared each other despite the forces pulling them apart. Zuko's eyes tried to reassure her pain stricken ones.

"Please, don't let them take you." Katara pleaded to him. Zuko let his eyes close before looking into hers again, their lips were only an inch away...

"I love you." He whispered to her.

Her chest closed and she gasped. The men suddenly jerked him away from her.

"No, ZUKO!" Katara cried out. Catching the face of Bato among the whirl of movement and crying commands, Katara almost felt relief.

"Bato!" She cried out, feeling his hands grab hers and all but drag her from Zuko. Her eyes jumped to his golden ones, afraid. Zuko watched as he was forcibly apprehended by the men. Arms yanked back into confinements, he could only wait silently as Katara tried to cry them to stop.

"Please, stop! He's not our enemy!"

Bato held on, urging the men to begin to usher Zuko away. "Shaman Katara, it is too late. He needs to be taken into custody."

Katara turned on him, her eyes beginning to swell with tears. "But he has done nothing wrong!"

"He kidnapped you and killed several other of our men." Bato tried to reason. The dark clouds that gathered over them sent dark contrasting shadows over his face, Katara almost didn't recognize him.

"Kidnapped me?!" Katara exclaimed, "No, he didn't! Please you have to let him go!"

"Shaman, please, try to understand," Bato tried, keeping his hold on her firm. "We are under direct orders of your father to apprehend him. We can't do anything more."

Katara went still. Her heart caving within her chest. When Bato loosened his hold, she jerked free. Yet she did not go far before the other men held her. "Zuko!!" She yelled to him, the tears blurring her sight of the other men, but his eyes remained perfectly clear.

"I'll be alright, Katara." He called to her then. "Don't worry..."

I love you...she wanted to yell out. But a sudden pressure behind her neck caused the color and the dark to overwhelm her eyes and suddenly she was swallowed whole by the blackness of her mind.

So this is a fic I've been planning to write. I'm so close to actually getting it together it's making me squirm. In the meanwhile please enjoy that little snippet of what this picture has captured.
