How do you get around making the canvas look like it does? I really like the effect of it.

This texture is a scanned piece of paper.
I took a paper for watercolor and splashed water with a little paint on it. There are also a few scratches and smears of charcoal dust - whatever it takes to make it appear old and worn.
I use it (with a few adjustments) as a ground layer for most images the have this style.

It's not that much work - it's always the same texture. It is large enough to be moved and rotated so that it looks different every time.

Fluttershy is so innocent and hopeful that she'll never give up on her friend. Worst case Fluttershy knows sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, though hopefully that won't involve resorting to The Stare.
Fluttershy looks sweet with her hopeful smile and non-threatening posture. Emo Pie is definitely tense, perhaps even ready to throw up her front right hoof to scare Fluttershy and shoo her away. Her expression is pure meanness, but even she can't resist a supportive friend's love.
