Psssh, Heero is being read guard. The most important place to be is guarding the rear from attacks. If someone shoots a gun from behind, they are both in danger.

But they look more next to each other than in front or behind. It looks like Heero is telling Duo the plan.

It looks fantastic either way and to ME, totally believable.
