This has been a secret santa for a game organized by this group , for a user named Ryo .

I gotta admit, this picture's got almost nothing in common with my first few ideas. Initially I thought about doing something more fluff, with romance and stuff, for Ryo had this kind of thing on her wishlist.
But then I thought: "Heck, that's boring. 'Course it's nice, but nothing special, nothing I'd love to draw with passion. There's got to be something else."

So I re-read her wishlist and found AU as her favourite genre. And I thought: Hey, her favourite character Mystel has so much potential, I'll draw him in a fantasy-like outfit, something like beyfantasy from *SlumberPoppy . (Even though there's no chance this'll ever be as awesome as her designs.)
Said and done, I drew it and I really liked the Mystel I had drawn - sadly enough, something essential was still missing: The background.

So, I started to think. My first idea had been to surround him with water he's controlling, in some kind of ritual dance. But I can't draw water that's moving, so I had to find something else.
So my next idea had been to put him on a market, but his look was too distant, and I couldn't construct a fitting scene around his form.
So I needed something more abstract.
First I tought about two ornamental rings behind him, one showing his bitbeast as a pretty hieroglyph, the other a water temple.
But I didn't know how the rings should look like, and I had no clue how to turn such an ugly bitbeast into a pretty glyph, so I just drew his mask in the background instead. THen I started addeing simple rings, putting other favourite characters of Ryo inside of them, and then my sister ~CaSinfonikerchen had the idea.
She told me that Mystel looked like a dancing thief, and that he should be member of a dance guild that's robbing people and dances to keep a low profile. And she told me to draw everyone the same bracelet to show they're all members of that guild.
I liked this and drew it, and to add some more detail I drew everyone's bitbeast in some form or another behind him.

And I have to say, I really like how this turned out, and I'm motivated to draw some of the other shown characters as well, for I just like this kind of AU.
