--Hinata's POV--
It had been a little over a week since her awkward encounter with Kiba, and since then she and Sasuke had been spending more time together. He still followed her around, but he had become her safe place. She felt like she could tell him anything. The biggest problem was how her heart always sped up when he was around...she was getting worried that she might be falling for him. She pushed those thoughts aside when she heard Kiba calling her name.
"Hinata! The Hokage wants to see us! Shino's already there waiting for us!" She nodded her head and they started running to the Hokage's office. Tsunade looked bored when they arrived and Shino stood quietly against the wall, nodding his head to greet them both.
"Team 8, I need the three of you to go to the village hidden in the sand to deliver this message to the Kazekage, it's important that it gets to him as soon as possible" Tsunade said glancing between the three of them then handing a scroll over to Hinata.
"Yes Lady Tsunade, we'll deliver it right away" she said, bowing to her superior before turning and heading out with Shino, Kiba, and Akamaru trailing behind.
--Sasuke's POV--
He watched Hinata and her team mates as they headed for the gates of Konoha, he wasn't sure where they were going or why, and he really didn't care, but he didn't trust Inzuka or Aburame to look out for Hinata, so he followed them, making sure to go unnoticed. Everything seemed to be fine for the first few hours, but then Sasuke started to get an uncomfortable feeling, so he activated his Sharingan and scouted the area. He saw a kunai headed straight for him and was quick to dodge the flying weapon. All of a sudden kunai's were coming from everywhere. He dodged them over and over, trying to defend himself and watch Hinata at the same time. He saw her jump from the semi safe spot she was in when a wave of kunai was headed straight for the Inzuka boy and his pup. She pushed them both out of the way but put herself right in the line of fire. Sasuke didn't think, he just acted. He jumped out of his hiding spot and ran as fast as he could. He knew there was no way he could keep them both out of harms way, but he couldn't just stand by and watch the woman he loved be killed.
--Hinata's POV--
She saw the kunai headed straight for Kiba and Akamaru and rushed to get her team mates to safety. She pushed them out of the way, closed her eyes, and braced herself for what was coming, but instead of the searing pain of the sharp weapons, she felt strong arms being wrapped around her and heard the kunai sink into someone else's flesh. She opened her eyes to see who had stopped the barrage of weapons and felt tears sting her eyes as she realized who her hero was. Sasuke Uchiha had taken a shaky step back so she could see his smile. She felt the tears rolling down her cheeks as she looked at that sad smile and watched the blood run from his mouth and his right eye.
"W-Why?" She asked him through the tears, she didn't understand why he always saved her. They barely knew each other, so she didn't understand why he would risk ending his life, just to save hers. He raised his hand as if to wipe away her tears before falling to the ground unconscious with that sad smile still on his face.
--Sasuke's POV--
When he woke up, he felt like he had been stabbed a hundred times. Then he remembered what had happened and sat up quickly, gasping when the pain hit him.
"No, don't get up, you'll tear your wounds open again." He looked to the side to see a young girl putting flowers beside him in a nurses outfit. It was then he realized where he was.
"How did I get here?" the last thing he remembered was searing pain and looking into Hinata's crying eyes...*Hinata!* he thought, worried about where and how she was.
"Team 8, brought you here, the Hyuuga girl made sure you had all the accommodations you would need to be comfortable. You had lost a lot of blood, and you probably won't be able to use that eye trick of yours for a while. It almost caused you to go blind in your right eye. You have to be more careful." she scolded, he was relieved to hear that Hinata was alright. She walked out of the room after checking his vitals and making sure he had everything he needed.
"S-Sasuke?" He felt his heartbeat speed up when he heard her voice whisper his name.
"Oh, Hi Hinata" he said and smiled at her
"C-Can I come in?" she asked, hardly meeting his eyes. He nodded his approval and she came in and sat in the chair next to his bed.
"H-How are y-you feeling?" she asked quietly
"I'm feel like hell, but I'll be fine" he said while shrugging his shoulders, he noticed that she was staring at her hands and wouldn't look at him at all now.
"Is something wrong Hinata?" he asked, hoping that he hadn't upset her. He noticed her shoulders start to shake and realized she was crying.
"Hinata! Are you ok?" he said and scooted closer to her. When he went to grab her hand to comfort her, she pulled back, he felt a dull ache in his heart when she pulled away from him, but didn't let it show.
"Why?" he heard her whisper
"Why, What?" he asked
She picked her head up and he saw the tears flowing down her cheeks "Why did you do that?! Why put your life on the line for me?! You barely know me! So why?!" she half screamed through the tears. He didn't know what to say, so he just sat there with a dumbfounded look on his face. She jumped out of her chair and turned her back on him.
"I-I don't understand it. Why bother? Why save me? Don't you value your own life?!"
--Hinata's POV--
She was still crying, and she was so angry her body was shaking. She couldn't wrap her head around why he had risked his life to save her. Why would he bother with someone he barely knew? He shouldn't have jumped in front of those weapons like that! He could have been killed! She didn't know what she would have done if he had died saving her...
"I-I don't understand it. Why bother? Why save me? Don't you value your own life?!" she choked out
"Not over yours..." he said quietly. His words made her whole body freeze.
"W-What?" she asked, shocked by what she had just heard.
She heard him sigh before continuing "I don't think I value anything more than your life. All I want is for you to be safe and happy. That's all I've wanted since the day we met at the academy. So I've made sure to keep a close eye on you, that way you would always have someone watching out for you, even if you didn't know they were there. I didn't understand why I couldn't leave you alone, I still don't..."
She just stood there, listening to her heart thundering in her ears.
"...all I know is that I would do anything for you, Hinata Hyuuga."
