Yep. Smooth shading. :3 I had never used soft-edged brushes before, so I completely forgot about 'em.
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks and I had to smack myself repeatedly. This was mostly vent-art, so I didn't pay much attention to the shading. However, I did have a lot of fun playing around with this regardless.
The more I think about it, the more I believe that Rykier would want (re: beg/force) Marcella into acquiring some level of self-defense, just in case he or her bodyguards were taken out. Sense Marcella wants to be seen as elegant at all times, I figure swords would be fitting for her.
Fun fact: Thanks to all the plastic surgery done to her over the years, Marcella has a harder time feeling pain, especially in her face, torso, and legs. While being nowhere near invulnerable, she can withstand attacks that normal people couldn't.

WOA, dude, WOA. For one thing THAT PICTURE, MAN. It might have been a vent picture but DAMN it came out SUPER. You've used the soft-shadow effect before, I believe, and I always love it when you do because you take advantage of it and allow it to create the mood that you want it to.
There is really nothing I can say about the shading as far as critique. It is dynamic in the tones of light and dark, and it looks quite natural in feel. The entire picture might only have two or three major colors that are simply set in different tones, which makes it elegant and smooth to look at.
Wow, she had plastic surgery? I should have guessed but now I wonder what she looked like before she had it. I mean, what exactly did she do? Yeah. But your theory with the nerve ending thing is right. You lose a ton of nerves during plastic surgery.
The little details of the sword are cool though me personally, I would have made the handle a bit bigger because if it was that snug on her hand I think it might be painful to use.
