This morning I kept clicking on art by you, eventually got into the "papercraft," and just couldn't pass this one up. I think it's a grand piece. Your choice of materials make this seem very special - and look even better. The way the colors in the background are picked up in the outer frame is good. The very simplicity of the piece is possibly due to hours spent getting it right. (Right?) A small color palette makes what you did both restful and commanding. I've seen many herons and you have it right here, in profile and at rest, perhaps. The reeds are beyond 'simple' and into very clever, the way they break up the solid black. That black sets off both cool and warm colors used very well. It also is seen on the mountains in the distance, giving this depth. I can't find anything I don't like about this - except maybe the size of the email address, though I'm sure that isn't part of the finished product. Even then, I like the "pop" of red. And the overall texture of the rice paper is tops. Are commissions still open after all this time? I know you're still around...hmm...maybe I should try that email.

Thanks so much for your comments, and thoughtful critique.

BTW ^that email is defunct. I can be reached at ThisFava@gmail.com, or HoundOfHavoc@gmail.com. ;]

Or here, but infrequently.

This is one of my all time favourite pieces as well! And I'm wanting to do more of this type of art recently.

I hope I can make the time; and then bother to scan and post them.

The translucency of the rice paper fascinates me for this. And I really love that you broke the border with the reeds - it's really well designed.

Thank you!

Designing these is the most complicated time-consuming part!
I'm gearing up for a Chinese New Year piece [I hope!], so I very much appreciate the specific feedback!

Oh wow that'd be awesome! I know what you mean - designing something so precisely takes a long time for it to come out lookin good!

the hardest part for me is drawing it 'backwards' - i cut them out from the back. especially tricky with lettering.

folderol In reply to KreepingSpawn [2011-02-04 19:14:25 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see. That does make it tricky. I'm currently working on a small series of block prints and I'm having the same problem - I find it so difficult to work backwards... Haha I'm gonna hafta start using tracing paper better.

i usually do my drawings on white paper and then glue them to the 'back' of my card.
for text i write it out on the computer and then mirror it and work from that.

Ah so smart! I wish I could do that for carving these blocks!

what kind of 'blocks' do you mean?

Linoleum blocks.

KreepingSpawn In reply to folderol [2011-02-05 05:06:12 +0000 UTC]

ahah! yeah, that would be rather difficult. ;/
hmm... maybe you could use carbon paper?

folderol In reply to KreepingSpawn [2011-02-05 05:29:40 +0000 UTC]

You know, I totally forgot about carbon paper. Do you know if the lines erase easily?

Not sure. I'd say experiment with it lightly. [i'm sure you could figure that out... ]

So I thought of something else that worked for the block prints - cutting the first layer, and then printing it with a dark ink, then using a lightboard to trace the outlines onto another page. I think it worked out pretty well!

thanks! i had originally planned to do a generic blue-ish sky/water background... but i found this paper and thought it would really 'pop' the subdued colors of the heron.

thanks for having a look!
picked up the rice papers a while ago and forgot about it. then was looking for papers for this project and they resurfaced. i like the effect of the textures. it doesn't show as much as i would like, but there are actually leaves embedded in the green paper. will def be working with these more in the future!
