Description Um... I just finished reading Susan Kay's novel Phantom, so I was hit with another rare moment of inspiration. At first, I was going to paint when he found Ayesha, but I didn't want to paint both a frozen lake and Parisian buildings... so... his only companion here is the gaslight. It always bugged me how people dres Kay's or Leroux's Phantom with his mouth showing, since he has severly deformed lips, so the mask covers his entire face except his eyes. Which is annoying if you want to convey emotion in any way... so that's probably why the half-mask developed.

At first I wanted historical accuracy with the costume, but I decided against it since Erik is pretty eccentric anyway. So it's mostly historical. I took a lot of inspiration from the movie Phantom (gloves, vest, mask). I tried to make it look all texturey but I couldn't quite get the cape right...

The half mask developed not only due to the fact that the full mask made it hard to convey emotion, it made it hard to sing.

I always pictured Susan Kay's Erik with a complete mask; it seemed more reasonable Loved this picture! Great job!

AWWWW! He reminds me very much of Gwynplaine as a little kid, what with the scarf and all.

I this version of him, very much.

(Also, this isn't at all a criticism so much as something that makes me giggle--for a moment, with the single gaslight like that, I thought he was in Narnia. X-D)

Lovely pic with an especially good job on the eyes... "all the sadness of the world" as ALW put it fits with 'em. Neck seems a bit thick and long for the rest of his body (yea! Skeletal Erik!) but love the overall feeling. Smexy clothes too...

As for the mask...I THINK Leroux described it as a full face mask...black I remember for sure... But as I'm pretty sure he kissed her skirt with the thing on, not to mention spoke and sang while wearing it, the veil-version that Lon Chaney's Erik used would have been more accurate from a practical sense As you drew it though (as do a lot of other Leroux lovers...Iron-gibbet's first drawings of Erik come to mind), it is far more pleasing aesthetically than Chaney's...which always reminds me of an old-fashioned hospital mask.

I do tend to make people look a bit too young when I paint them... maybe it's a good thing?

It's a GREAT THING! If you draw people and say you can make them look younger , you'll be a self made MILLIONAIRE! Share your wealth, it is my idea. I'm teasing you!

Gods, I want to cry! The pain and hurt in his eyes is very apparent, and bravo for his eyes being golden as they're supposed to be! I *have* to read Kay's version soon, yet I can't find the book anywhere in Australia, which sucks majorly. *sigh* Still, much love for your picture. Wish I had any amount of that talent, I want to draw him... *another sigh* +fav

Thanks! The characterization of the Phantom/Erik was great in the book. I think the ending wasn't too good (I like the Leroux/ALW ending better), but it was still worth it to read.

And thanks muchly for the fav, too!

Really? I don't like that the moral of Leroux's story is poor Erik, poor monster who knows no better... I think I'd like Kay's better... but then, I always did have a thing for the underdogs and the badboys... hahaah! Two birds, one stone! Huzzah!

It's actually not the best book (sorry!) because Christine is a little... odd... but the characterization of the Phantom was pretty good.

I'm lucky to have gone on vacation to Las Vegas, so I saw the production there. It was short, but the special effects were awesome.

But, anyway, great pic. I love the mask. A lot of people CAN NOT pull the full, Leroux mask off without making Erik look like a total idiot. So, congrats!

I don't think the full-face mask is a barrier of any sort. His eyes and body language convey pain quite clearly (well, at least, I *assume* that's anguish he's meant to express). I like all the little details you threw in - the lamp, the snow, the texture on his clothing - and of course, his gloves.

kristinamy In reply to DarthFar [2006-09-13 01:42:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

I'm actually not exactly sure what sort of emotion he's supposed to be feeling right now... in the book he's feeling depressed. Just so long as he doesn't look like "hey look pretty snow" I'm fine.
