It was around $500 with the kid lens. There are better alternatives with modern CMOS sensors now. I'd look into a D3200 or a D5300. Canon has released a bunch of great models for good competition too.

My classmates and I once raised monarchs, they have been my favorite since then. The colors are so rich. This is the best photo of a monarch butterfly I have seen.

Pretty, I love the angle and vivid colors! The focus is great, and the background is beautiful, yet not at all distracting.
The blurred leaves look like brush strokes on a canvas, and the butterfly is positioned in a perfect spot on the frame.
