Description
Kroashent is my upcoming story, a Celtic fantasy series inspired by the mythology and history of Brittany and Northwestern France. Today's character introduction is Antoinette Beaumoulin, the eager lady-in-waiting and squire to Enora de Chinon. Seconddaughter of a wealthy merchant family, Antoinette has been retained by the House of de Chinon to make her into a proper lady. Unfortunately for that plan, Enora is quite supportive of Antoinette's goals to become a knight, even if her idea of the class is somewhat outdated and romanticized. Always eager to help others as a chivalrous knight-in-training, Antoinette is one of Enora's most loyal friends and allies.

Antoinette serves to correct something of an oversight in the development of Kroashent, namely that for being set in Brittany, I had only actually introduced one Breton character, whose outfit has little in common with traditional Breton Costume. Antoinette's civilian outfit is modeled after the traditional costume of Brittany, and is much more in keeping with the everyday style of the region. In addition to the intricate embroidery on her clothing, the most important piece of her clothing is her Lace Coiffe. Elaborate lace hats, each specific to a region of Brittany, are one of the most recognizable elements of Breton dress. Antoinette's Coiffe is, to the best of my knowledge, based on a design from the city of Vitré (Gwitreg in Alvez), her hometown. You can see the original design here: www.collections.musee-bretagne… There are several others that seem to originate from the city, but this one I think works the best for Antoinette.
You may notice that Antoinette has another name in her picture, Annaig Milinmad. This is because her father, a powerful merchant, is aligned politically with the French inspired Gallia, and has taken a Gallian surname for himself and his family. This reflects the history of the Breton language and other non-French languages of what is now France (and and even Norman England), seen by the nobility of the middle ages as the "common" language, while French is the more noble language.
Antoinette's arms are a windmill and a Fleur-de-Lys, the latter representing her family's connections with Gallia. The windmill is a nod to her other inspiration, the quintessential Knight-Errant in the wrong time, Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha.
