krustyismyname1 — Spring loaded/retractable hidden blade sketches

Description Lately I have been obsessing over this. I am determined to make a hidden blade as much like Altair's as possible. I'm following his design, changing it slightly, and I think it should work the way I have it. Now I just have to think of a good way to get the smaller half of the blade (the sharp part) to lock in place, but that shouldn't be too hard.
I'll probably spend another few weeks working on that...


This is difficult to explain, but I will try.

First of all, the ring part is the trigger. I'm pretty sure the blade is triggered by a button or something that is pressed by a tendon in the arm, but I don't want anything jabbing into my wrist, so I'm using a pull-string mechanism instead. Also, it looks like that's what's supposed to trigger it. The string is tied to a little loop in the ring and the ring is put on the ring finger and pulled with that wrist-flicking action.

The string will be fed through small rings inside of the gauntlet, away from the other moving parts, and it will spin the little knob which is on the same axle as this gear.

The gear is on a torsion spring and as it spins, tension on the spring is built up, and will be used to retract the blade back into place.

The gear is on a simple rack & pinion system, and the track part (the long straight part) will be forced upwards.

The end of the track is connected to the end of the scissor mechanism, which has springs on it, giving the blades extra speed and force.

As the track reaches the end of the scissor mechanism, the springs will be able to push the end upwards, and the crossing scissor parts (which also have torsion springs between them) will open up, pushing the blade out of the top of the gauntlet.

The blade (the sharp part) will be pushed out by the forces already in motion (Newton's first law of physics)

RETRACTING: The torsion spring on the gear will be really tight and want to spin itself back into place, so when the string is released, the gear will spin (in the opposite direction as before) and the gears, string, and blades will move in reverse, bringing everything back to the way it started.
The string retracts back onto the knob and will twist itself back around
The blade (the sharp part) will be pulled in by itself just like it did the other way.

So, that's how I'm hoping it'll work. The locking mechanism (to keep the blade out/in) shouldn't be too hard to figure out, and that's the last part I need to do. I could use little switches or buttons, but I want to make it all automatic. If I can't, well I know the switches or buttons will work. Then, I can model these parts and 3D print them.

Very cool! Could you maybe record some measurements for this? I'd be interested in trying this out, myself. Found a few tutorials on YouTube, but they don't have measurements on them.

Of course, I'll have to record the measurements for it, I'm going to model and 3D print all the parts so I need to have every little measurement written down. I could probably let people download the file with the parts after I model it.

Thank you! That would be awesome. I found a video made by a Vietnamese person on YouTube, but they only had the final dimensions (in centimeters) recorded... and it was made out of cardboard and superglue. Looked nice, and the mechanism worked brilliantly, but I don't have THAT good of an analytical mind, with everything else I try to do on a daily basis.

I've seen some pretty good blades, but I decided to follow Altair's blueprints instead of the step-by-step instructions I've found in other places. I hope this works, I've never built anything like this before

Neither have I, I'm no good with technical stuff unless I can see it, hold it, and examine every square inch of it to find out how it works. Something like this, I would have to dissect and put back together before I could recreate it.

Yeah, I've made simpler things like little wooden stools and birdhouses, and I've used gears, wheels, and 3D modeling programs in engineering class, but that's pretty much all the experience I have. Well, this looks like it's gonna work, I'll probably have to tweak it a little, and I think I have to add some stuff to it, but it looks simple enough that I'll be able to make little changes without changing the design too much
