Description (An updated version of Dusk can be seen here: [link] )

This is a character that has been floating around in my mind in one form or another for a while now.

Dusk is NOT a Sonic character.

----------

Profile

Name: Dusk
Species: Cat-based sapientspawn (see background)
Age: 106 years old
Height: 4 feet, 6 inches (137 centimeters)
Weight: 85 pounds (38.6 kilograms)
Physical Description: Dusk is a bipedal cat-like entity composed of a solidified version of dark matter. He is covered with shiny black fur that is slick and cool to the touch. Each of his enlarged forelimbs and feet terminate in 3 sizeable claws that are metallic silver in color. Whilst durable in nature, these claws are also flexible and can be bent like normal digits. His medium blue eyes possess pupils that change shape depending on the ambient lighting conditions. He also possesses triangular ears that point backward.
Personality: Friendly, open-minded and helpful. Dusk cares greatly for his family and does what he can to make life better for them. A peace-lover by nature, he will first try to resolve conflicts with his enemies by nonviolent means. If that isn't possible (and in his experience, it often isn't) he does everything he can to end the fight as quickly as possible. In battle, he is always cautious of his opponent's abilities and never takes a chance with them. He is a fighter that plays heavily on the offensive and has no qualms about smacking an enemy while they're in the middle of a "superiority speech". He believes that arrogance is an exploitable weakness and for that reason never taunts his adversaries.
Background: In the Pacific Ocean, there exists a small island untouched by mankind. Deep with the heart of this isolated landmass is a large, deep cave, inhabitated by an intelligent and ancient life form known as Sapient. Hidden from the outside world for millenia, this being held a strong curiosity for the knowledge that existed outside of its dark den. For reasons currently unknown, Sapient is unable to leave his abode. Thousands of years ago, he finally devised a way to quench his thirst for knowledge despite his challenging situation. By manipulating pieces of his own substance through willpower, Sapient was able to create offspring which could readily go out into the world and bring back information. These offspring are called sapientspawn. Although many of the sapientspawn have honored their father and willingly collected knowledge for him, others were negatively-influenced by the world and became deviant (much like human beings can). Some of them became downright dangerous; threatening humanity with the powers that Sapient had originally granted them. Concerned by this, Sapient began to create a new batch of sapientspawn called trackers to find, defeat and subsequently return these deviant offspring to the cave of their birth. This gave rise to the creation of Dusk; the first tracker.
Abilities: Sapient has given Dusk various powers that aid him:
Amorphism - Dusk is capable of transforming his entire body into a gas-like cloud of dark matter when the need arises. In this form, physical attacks are usually worthless against him. However, this form is inefficient at retaining energy. For this reason, it will cause him to lose large amounts of power if he remains in it for too long. In order to compensate, he typically enters this form for short bursts of time.
Black Cyclone - This is Dusk's most powerful technique. After flying high above the ground, he transforms into his amorphic state and spins rapidly. This causes him to become a vortex that rapidly widens to assume the appearance of a dark hurricane. A powerful source of gravity at the cyclone's eye in conjunction with raging winds causes objects underneath it to be ripped out of the ground. The resulting debris (and any unlucky opponent) is drawn in towards the eye where the shearing forces are so strong that they are ripped to shreds and disintegrated. This technique is extremely taxing to Dusk's energy reserves and he often reverts to his primordial form after its usage (see "Limitations" below). For this reason, he often uses it only as a finishing move and when he is reasonably certain that it will succeed.
Dark Breath - Dusk can blow streams of dark matter from his nostrils which collect into a giant, spherical or hemispherical blob. Within this blob, the energy content of the vacuum is modified so that matter can only move at a fraction of its normal speed. Typically, it is slowed down by 25%. However, dark matter itself isn't slowed down, which means that Dusk can move with his regular speed within the blob. Any opponents inside of the blob are therefore easier for Dusk to hit and dodge than outside of it. If an enemy manages to get out of this cloud of Dusk's breath, then they are no longer slowed down.
Flight and Levitation - In order to travel across the ocean, Dusk was given the ability to fly. By manipulating the dark energy in his vicinity, he can create a repulsive force that keeps him aloft despite the pull of gravity. When flying at high speed, his body tapers into a snake-like shape reminiscent of the legendary Tatzelwurm.
Longevity - At over a century old, Dusk is still in his youth. Although the upper limits of his life span are unknown, he does age and will eventually die from it (if not killed in a fight first).
Nightvision - As with true cats, his eyes are highly sensitive to even low levels of light. In the case of absolute darkness (such as in caves), Dusk can also produce blue light from his eyes that provide a way of illuminating his immediate environment.
Shadow Grip - A way of moving objects at a distance. In order to use this ability, Dusk produces a small ball of dark matter in his hand (as shown in the image). He then throws it, baseball pitcher-style, towards his intended target. If the ball hits the object, the dark matter it contains is released which subsequently envelopes it. It is at this point that the target is "marked" for Dusk's control. By clenching his fist, he essentially "grabs" the target at a distance and can then procede to move it with his arm motions. For example, he can use this ability to lift a distant object or opponent, smash it into the ground, or throw it. If the opponent if strong enough, they can break out of the dark matter envelope that surrounds them; neutralizing the technique.
Thought-casting - Dusk is incapable of speaking english or any other human language. In fact, he can't talk with his mouth at all. Instead, he communicates his ideas, emotions and intentions directly to his listeners via radio waves. This is similar to classical telepathy, but it is not based on psychic energy nor can he use it to read another's mind. The only beings he can use this technique to communicate with are other sapientspawn and Sapient himself. Dusk can transmit his thoughts in all directions at once (if speaking to a group) or in a confined beam (if he is speaking to a single person). In principle, a radio could be used to pick up his radio wave-based thought-casts. However, the transmissions are not in any language known to man and would sound like incomprehensible static.
Limitations: Although Dusk has no need for food, water, air, or sleep, he does require a specially processed form of energy that only Sapient can produce. Without it, he will eventually run out of energy and revert to his primordial form; an immobile, black sphere. In this state, Dusk isn't dead, but is in more of a hibernation mode. However, he is completely helpless in this primordial form and can easily be destroyed by an opponent that capitalizes on the situation. He can also be reduced to this primordial form if he takes a severe beating; a powerful blow will cause him to lose energy. Assuming that he is left intact, Dusk can be revived out of this state if some of Sapient's energy is supplied to him.

He's not evil at all. He's black because he's made of "dark" matter. Actually, dark matter itself is thought to be invisible, not black. So I just took some artistic license there.

Thats super awesome 8D. But, does he have a super form?

Thank you! He's not a Sonic character, though, so he doesn't go "super". Every year on his birthday, Sapient either improves one of his existing abilities or gives him a new one. So he has no super transformation (at least not yet).

I like how you made the energy thing.
I dont know how to make that.
I like the background too.
It`s just the tile effect, but it looks cool how you did it.

I'll try to explain. First, go to the plugins section on the Paint.NET forums and download the dents plugin.

To start off, make two layers in addition to the background. On the background, draw a red blob kind of like a fireball in shape. Make sure it is rather large. Next, on the layer directly above that one, draw an orange blob similar in shape to and slightly smaller than the first layer. Make sure it fits inside of the original red blob. Do the same for the third layer, but make it fit in the orange blob and make it yellow. Next, do a gaussian blur on all 3 layers (I think I did a 10-pixel blur). Finally, you'll need to use the dents distortion to make it wavy. Experiment with differing amounts of waviness to get different effects.

Thanks for the help!
I`ll try to do my best with what you just told me.
But what are plugins?
Are they extra downloadable features?

Kryptid In reply to HyperHedgehog [2007-03-27 04:27:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, plug-ins are new features for Paint.NET created by several people that attend their discussion board. There is a forum there about plug-ins that contains many of these features. Each thread should have a place to download the plug-in from. I would suggest getting the water reflection plug-in, and the new cloud plug-in too.

I think to get a better effect you should have maybe contrasted the background, nut the charactor itself looks pretty damn badass and I like the design, minus the claws, the claws catch too much attention in my opinion.

I was having a problem figuring out what color to make the background, yes. When you say the claws stand out too much, do you mean the color, or what?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Curtis13666 In reply to Kryptid [2007-03-24 05:07:56 +0000 UTC]

colour and shape of the claws mostly.
and for contrast just try colours out. if your using photoshop it shouldn't be too hard.
I'm thinking red and...maybe yellow, with some blending would make a good contrast.
