Maybe those shoulders could shoot missiles? Or maybe some kind of laser?

oh, yes, classical heroic "crush your own head" shoulder armour piece : )
still nice tho. i want to think that if this mech was developed by designers, there would've been a good reasons for this design, not just "this one should look fabulous!"

I don't see a problem considering "looking fabulous" as a good reason tho

i simply like when things have purpose. of course, there must be a compromise between purpose and form to look both beautiful and believable, but this mech looks like it is balancing those quelities well.

yeah, I only use photoshop.
brushes, dunno, bunch of them gathered from elsewhere or I made some myself.
In reality I use on blockout brush which is sensitive to tilt, just to get silhouettes. Then it's regular airbrush to get some values and then very simple "pencil" brush for first pass.
but really brushes don't matter, just stick to few simple ones without trying to get all of them. The less and simpler brushes you use - is better. Sure some brushes can give you nice effect, but in the end it's rarely worth it if rest of image is not up to it.
