Description Female American White Pelican

American White Pelicans are one of the largest of the boreal birds. They can weigh as much as 30 pounds and their wing spans can exceed nine feet. The bill can hold 3 gallons of water, and after the fish have been caught the bill is pointed downward allowing the water to drain, and then the bill is raised and the bird swallows. Because of pesticides, human disturbance, and the draining of wetlands, this species is in decline. The number of active colonies has dropped sharply in recent decades.

yup they really are quite glorius - only one I think is more impressive is the Great Blue Heron.

I hope I get the chance to get some shots of this group eating.

They seem to be okay with my (and the dogs) presence. They kept about 100 feet between us - but didn't take off. There was a group of about 20 geese there too, as soon as I got within about 300 feet or so they hopped in the water and kept about that amount of distance between us at all times.. so I'm hopefull for the Pelicans.
