Description For those of you who wanted the eye tutorial.

This is HOW I DRAW EYES. So this tutorial may NOT be for you- or you might not find it helpful at all etc. I’m sorry also if it isn’t as detailed as you would’ve liked because I am pretty bullshit at explaining things through text unless it’s a story/fanfic- I need to be able to talk to you if I am trying to teach/explain something to you- so yep sorry if communication in this ‘tutorial’ is poor.

The top part is using Jack Frost as a model to show you how I usually structure a basic male face. Female is pretty much the same only less angles.

The second part is how I break it all down to using BASIC SHAPES- I cannot stress this enough, I’m pretty sure when you talk of eyes you say they’re ‘almond’ or ‘oval’ or even ‘slanted’ etc. Think of those words and put them into SHAPE FORM.

As you can see from the highlighted blue, I use no.2 shape most as it is a strong shape and is well suited for the men that I draw. However I do use it in variation making it more slanted, or wider depending on the character, their mood and what they are doing.

Finally 3rd part- EXPERIMENT, Google image some eyes for goodness sake- you have an AMAZING set of resources right there.

But what I cannot stress enough is think of the EMOTION. For me it is the eyes and eyebrows and set of the mouth that really portrays how a character is feeling in my artwork. Smaller pupils for example usually portray fear and surprise pretty well, where as close drawn eyebrows and lidded eyes can show anger.

However this is just my take on eyes and how I think about drawing them and how I draw them. I did not show a step by step line by line thing because that would’ve been useless to you because you are not me.

As for character- bigger eyes usually portrays- childlikeness, happiness, a character who is fun loving, happy, carefree, laughs or smiles a lot, or is innocent.

Smaller eyes usually mean a more mature expression (to me at least).

Eyebrow placement can change A LOT in an expression as can nose shape and position- so study your character well or just go wild and keep drawing them until you get it how you want it to be.

^ That’s how I do it at least. (Took me 4 months to draw Jack how I do now.)

I love you. I've been looking for a easy to understand eye tutorial and you nailed it while not totally dumbing it down like other people.
