Hiccup turned to look at Jack, ignoring the bustle about them. Today stank, literally, the pollution was off the charts and Hiccup had taken extra precautions to ensure nothing was going to happen to his mask. Jack smiled back easily at him, his lips crinkling upwards in a lopsided slant that looked so charming. Hiccup shoved the extra mask on his belt at Jack who took it in amusement.

"Hic, you know better than anyone that I don’t need this."

"Just put the fucking mask on."

Hiccup said shortly, his patience always wore thin whenever he needed to go outside and face the world and even worse: people. Hiccup couldn’t stand people especially people like Jack Frost. Jack tucked the mask back onto Hiccup’s belt with another easy smile, Hiccup wanted to wipe that smile off of his pale lips.

"Hey, Hiccup…?"

"What?"

"Do you trust me?"

Jack asked, his blue eyes wide and sincere as he played anxiously with his shirt collar, unsure as he waited for the answer. Hiccup shrugged as he checked the gears on his mechanical arm, twisting it this way and that with soft clicks. It wouldn’t do for it to jam up. Jack shifted from foot to foot, Hiccup knew those smiles had been too easy, too forced. Jack was nervous.

"No."

"What?"

Jack looked betrayed and Hiccup looked at him, glad his own expression was hidden by the majority of his gas mask. Jack swallowed and rubbed at his eyes tiredly, the pollution was making his eyes itch and water from irritation. Hiccup sighed, he really hated life and the people round him so fucking much.

"No I do not trust you."

"Oh come on Hiccup, I trust you enough to let you lead me round like a blinkered horse."

"That is different."

Hiccup replied as he looked about quickly, the small alley they stood within gave little shelter yet no one paid the pair any attention as they hurried past the opening, heads down, masks covering their thin faces. Hiccup sighed the sound coming out muffled as he faced Jack properly.

"What do you want Jack?"

"I want you to trust me, believe in me."

Jack said quietly, Hiccup rolled his eyes and crossed his arms as Jack came closer. Hiccup did not back away, he stood his ground and waited.

"I want you to understand that I don’t want to hurt you."

Jack continued, coming closer still, Hiccup watched him carefully.

"And that I’m a friend, I owe you my life Hiccup, you gave me life and the only way I can ever repay you is to stay by you and make sure you get a good quality of life in this shithole."

"That’s fucking cheesy."

Hiccup retorted and Jack chuckled, now only centimetres away from Hiccup, that easy smile was back, but it was nervous- genuine.

"I know, please just trust me."

Hiccup said nothing and Jack’s smile dropped as he reached up with a slow hand as if scared he might startle Hiccup before gently pulling down the mask covering the mechanic’s freckled features. Hiccup went stock still, willing himself not to panic, to trust Jack. Half of him wanted to slam Jack into the wall and beat the shit out of him for even trying to take his mask, the other half was intensely curious. The curiosity won and Hiccup felt the mask slip off of his face to hang round his neck. He opened his mouth and Jack was kissing him.

Oh.

Hiccup’s mechanical arm wound round Jack’s shoulder, grasping the shirt fabric in surprise and Jack saw this as an invitation, pressing more into the kiss as he tangled his fingers through thick auburn hair.

Confused Hiccup stayed still, letting Jack kiss him.

It was warm, weird, but it was not unpleasant.

Jack stepped back with a sheepish grin and Hiccup stood staring at him silently before choking a little as his body decided to remind him he was rather vulnerable to the toxic atmosphere. Pulling up his mask again Hiccup closed his eyes as he turned away from Jack- who was grinning like he won the lottery.

"Never do that again."

Hiccup began to walk away and he heard Jack follow him without question, Hiccup scowled- he hated people.

Jack simply smiled some more.
