Description Polish diesel locomotive created in 1965 by Voloshilovgrad Locomotive Factory in Luhansk/Lugansk (USSR, now Ukraine). When the M62 locomotives entered service in 1965, Poland received the first four locomotives. In total, it received 1,194 locomotives. It was also the most powerful locomotive at the Polish Railways' disposal. The locomotive was mainly intended for freight transport and heavy loads. Many locomotives are still used today by private carriers and state railways (PKP Cargo). Some of them were modernized to new standards, some of them were rebuilt into completely new locomotives, for example the ST40 locomotive manufactured by Newag in Bydgoszcz or the complete conversion of ST44 into the 207E Edgar electric locomotive by RailPolska.
