Really like your use of color on the fish. It's almost Monet-like with how the color seem to fuse together on it, along with the color subtleties in the area. Nice work!
Also reminds me to clean my tank...it doesn't look like pea soup at all but when my betta's occasionally swimming vertically, that can't be a good sign

The colours were mostly painted on opaquely, and then a final layer was used to harmonise all the colours, (Overlay in Photoshop).

Not very shy at all in terms of color use. And I've always liked the textures that you create, especially in the bluer ares of this fish.
The lighting in the background is super-realistic, too.

Hey bro! Thank you for the ups on my work.. it means a lot to me that you like the piece.
The textures are so easy to make.. you would be surprised.. in this case I took some texture from a fish's body and turned it into a brush to paint with. Also the background was done in a similar way, for example the swirls in the back were made from a cloud brush.
Haha.. glad you like the lighting.. there are about two kinds here, also the fish is emitting light.. or supposed to be..

Textures, eh? I've always wanted to look into that. Did you take the texture directly from a photo of a fish?

Yes, pretty much, you desaturate it in Photoshop (Ctrl + Shift + U), cut out a section of what you would like to use as a texture, then lighten it a bit with a Brightness/Contrast adjustment (it's in Image, Adjustments), use a soft eraser and gently remove the edges around the section you cut out, and then to make it into a brush, go to Edit, Define Brush Preset. Then you can paint with it like a brush.

Awww thank you, glad you like, these weren't actually the original colours, I have another painting but with green colours, I wasn't sure which one to show.. but this one kind of won me over.. with the colours..
The fish is based on a squid, it is in fact a squid, but looks somewhat like a fish, I think there is a frill around the mouth which can make all the difference.. and normal fish don't have tentacles so.. I'm not sure how to make it wholly squid-like though.. yet. Thank you for your kind words.. keep well for now.
