This is not a cossack. Cossacks are against the USSR. The USSR is against cossacks. However incorrect the title, the details and atmosphere are reminiscent of old James Bond movies, in which sexy Soviet spy girls almost, but do not quite defeat the hero. Perhaps it is because of the circulation-restricting garters and pantyhose?

Ack, sorry. I meant to say that the Cossacks were pretty much split. Early on, most sided with the Whites, but then the poor started siding with the Reds. Both stole from the peasants, saying it was for their own good (whatever that meant...). Nobody knew with whom to side, but they had to pick. It was hell, quite plainly. Later, they decided that Russians were all assholes. You should watch or read Quiet Flows the Don. It's a really great historical epic, not unlike Gone with the Wind, and it provides a lot of insight into pre-Revolution Cossack culture. If you find I've gotten something wrong, please don't hesitate to correct me or add new info.
