Description Thanks for stopping by!

This tutorial was made in Paint Tool SAI 2, beta.

For simplicity's sake only the pencil, air brush, and eraser tool were used. Mouse and keyboard only, no tablet either.

The only special tools used were a gentle eraser, which is turning down the density on the eraser tool to do light erasing instead of complete erasing, changing the brush texture to blotches for irregular coloring patterns, and bristle brush for the filaments in Tiger's Eye. Those three easy changes are included in the program, 1 step alterations to the standard tools.

Gems and Polished rocks are some of the more tricky things to draw, because their appearance is unique to each rock, and highly dependent on brightness and number of light sources. An onyx on a black surface in low lighting is very simple looking, where as one on a white table with multiple bright light sources shows flaws, bumps, reflections, and other little details. Shadows and reflected light for semi-clear gems is just a mess of fun.

I used about a zillion layers, and spent lots of time turning opacity up and down to each to get the look right. Compare with your references and don't be afraid to turn layers down to very low opacity or switch them to shine or shade or burn if it looks good!

If you have any trouble following what I did, feel free to message me with questions!

Cheers,
~Kei
