Ah, you said you were trying too!
I never see this trick in any tutorial (I wonder if they are keeping it a secret), no idea if someone does if like that too, but have you already tried using a normal brush, with no effects, and then an eraser with low opacity to make the shading a bit softer? It works for me!
I think I can try to do a tutorial myself later. I consider unfair that almost nobody mentions it.
