Yeah, about the whole torch thing. Medieval torches were not made with modern refined petroleum, it was full crude tar. You would never bring a lit torch indoors, it would just fill the place with a cloud of black smoke and make it impossible to see anything. Not to mention the risk of asphyxiation.
What people actually used to see in the dark is lanterns, candles and oil lamps (animal fat oil, not petroleum). Torches were more often used to set stuff on fire rather than as a way to see in the dark.
