Description EDIT: Here's my much improved version of this entry. Click it! It's so much better! xD [link]

Okay, the rules said "anything goes" when it comes to being creative with the template. This is something that I've always wanted to try.

When thinking about costume ideas, I thought ghost might be fun. Even more relevant to deviantART would be the ghost of a painter. OOoo....! Scary, huh? I was thinking about the typical spooky noises a ghost would make, along with reaching out with the hands so I thought, "that would look so cool in 3-D... So there you go.

Disclaimer: The 3-D effect is for the cool factor and how it enhances the image. If you are not able to get the 3-D image, DO NOT FORCE IT. If your eyes start to hurt or you get a headache, STOP TRYING TO SEE THE 3-D IMAGE. I am not responsible for any headaches, eye aches/injuries, temporary or permanent. (Although I SERIOUSLY doubt any would be permanent, I have to cover my bases...)

In order to view in 3-D, you need to cross your eyes so that the two pictures merge. It will look like you have three images, the two originals on their respective sides, and in the middle will be the 3-D image. If you have trouble getting the 3-D effect, try holding a pen close to your face and focus on it with your eyes. Then slowly move the pen back towards the computer screen, while keeping it in focus.

Mind you guys, not everyone can do this, so if it doesn't work for you, for your viewing pleasure, simply choose one side of the image to look at.

how in the hell did you make the 3D effect?

Kuroikii In reply to familyof6 [2011-08-24 15:45:39 +0000 UTC]

The 3D effect was made the same way they make 3D animated films. By filtering two differing images into each eye, the illusion of depth is created. It is basically taking advantage of our sense of depth perception. In order to bring the object forward, I moved the object to the left or right just a tad in one of the pictures. This tricks the eyes into thinking that the image is closer or farther away.

So this:
[--o-] [--o-]
(same exact images)

Becomes this:

[--o-] [-o--]
(slightly different)

I hope that makes sense!

If you want to learn more about stereoscopic images (which started in the 1800s!!!) you can check out this Wikipedia article about the subject: [link] Those old, stereoscopic photographs work in the same way as this piece of artwork! (Although, they had super awesome viewing thingamabobs!)

Wow this is amazing! Great idea with the 3D thing I only managed to get it when I copied it into Photoshop, zoomed out to 25% and stood about 3 metres away from the computer lol but it was great when I did get it

How can you manipulate my eyes like that?!? Maybe I just haven't seen this kind of art before really, but this being 3-D must be one of the coolest things I've come across on DA! Fella looks evil; I get the impression he goes out periodically to kill something so he can paint with its blood.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuroikii In reply to Last-Leaf [2009-10-18 03:24:48 +0000 UTC]

That's the idea! :3 He's quite the evil little guy in this picture.

I know I'm not the first person on dA to use stereoscopic 3-D imagery in their art. It's the first time I've tried it, though.

It would be rather unfortunate if a majority of the judges weren't able to view the 3D part. BUT that's unlikely, so yeah. FANTASTIC concept, you deifinately would win the area of creativity, hands-down

Xelioth [2009-10-17 21:07:44 +0000 UTC]

gack! you have to stay way the heck back to be able to cross an image this large

the text doesn't seem to quite work. it's close but you have to refocus to read it. can't see both the image and the text at the same time.

still, gratz on the creative idea!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuroikii In reply to Xelioth [2009-10-17 22:37:31 +0000 UTC]

Standing about 2.5 feet away tends to work best. I have no trouble with the text, though. It all works together, for me. Maybe I'll make it a little closer.

Then again, no one in my family even seems to be able to get the 3-D effect to work in the first place. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks. It may help to stand about two feet or more away from the computer screen. That way, your eyes aren't physically "crossing' as much. :3

MattDeakinFineArt [2009-10-17 09:39:54 +0000 UTC]

Excellent ideaand excellently well EXECUTED (pun intended).

I was thinking that maybe you should try horizontally flipping one of the images which would then create a different ghost when going crosseyed. Just a thought.

Anyway, I've looked through the other entries and as always there are some truly brilliant pieces of which yours is one. What sets yours apart is the 3D idea which adds an extra level of creativity and in my book that's a good thing. Well done.

Kuroikii In reply to MattDeakinFineArt [2009-10-17 16:43:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment! I definitely wanted to be creative, clever, and above all, stand out. As far as the flipping the second image goes, I'll see what it looks like in Photoshop, but I also have to make sure we're allowed to edit the entries.
