Description Another pose that I nabbed from the show, this time from The Cutie Mark Chronicles. This is the absolutely adorkable smile she has plastered on her face after she got a wee bit overexcited (if anyone reading this doesn’t know why, watch the episode, it’s a spoiler).

Because I found myself struggling to control the gradient on the 4B on the last portrait, I decided to see what happens if I do the majority of my shading in HB (I didn’t use the 4B at all and the 2H was used very sparingly). I had to work a lot harder on the hair, but for the other parts, having better control helped a lot. Some parts look a little rough and I’m still not entirely sure I’m doing them (and a couple of the parts that look okay) right, either. Despite that, I’m rather satisfied with how she turned out.

Good Celestia, that is fan–theheck–tastic.

I'm trying to think of an apt way to describe, but I can't. Seriously that's amazing! Even the mane feels all textured and hair–like, not to mention the 3D look from the shading.

I mean dayumn.

I think you just went up about four levels on the Awesome scale.

Side note, this makes both you and *kitsuneymg artists I watch who went and got fancy art supplies. Maybe I need to be on the lookout for some too.

Wow, that's quite the heap of praise. Thanks.

Funny you should mention fancy art supplies. Believe it or not, the HB and 4B I've been using are a bit over a decade old. I bought them for a high school art class and then kind of left art behind for a while (sketched very occasionally with my 2H for what essentially amounted to character concept drawings). So yea, I dug up ancient relics of the past (seriously, they're old enough that the company that makes them has since changed the font they use to label the pencil type ) to start doing this shading.

But the twist here is that I actually did go out and buy some extra art supplies yesterday. My sketchbook is 2 pages away from being done and I needed another one of those. Plus I decided I like pencil work enough to grab one of those tins with everything from 4H to 6B. I grabbed something else I've been wanting to try out, but I'll leave that as a surprise for everyone when I actually get around to it.
