My only problem is that CS3 has "Clipping masks", not layer masks. Plus, there's a arrow pointing down when I make a layer a clipping mask instead of the chain.
Are they pretty much the same thing?

it has both - what you found was a clipping mask which uses the layer underneath to determine the visible pixels. You need to click on the layer mask symbol underneath the layers palette to get a layer mask as described above. the tutorial was written for PS7 quite some years ago, anything that version had is in the later ones too.

Another great time-saving tip! I've been using layer masks for awhile, but I didn't know about using the fill tool in conjunction. I've never thought of filters with masks. What a great idea. Thank you again.
