Description
The two Mario Bros. opened the blue doors at the end of the castle cautiously, relieved that the trip through the Toxic Forest was coming to an end. The journey through the castle itself wasn't too challenging, but they sure as hell didn't expect to see all that lava there. Especially after practically being intoxicated by the acid-like poison lakes that plagued the lands. Needless to say, it was a break from all of that rabid plant life and whatnot. But they both knew the journey wasn't over... not yet.

Mario led Luigi into the long hallway, treading slowly so his brother could catch up. They stepped lightly, trying to decipher who the next Koopaling standing in their way was going to be. Mario personally didn't know whether to smile or frown at the fact that they were seeing their sworn enemy's seven kids again. From what they've seen, none had really changed. Larry, still a crook and a cheat, wasn't that big of an issue to the Mario Bros. Roy, much more prideful than before, proved to be more challenging than previous times, but fell just like his brother. Lemmy hadn't changed at all - in fact, Mario started to think he was getting even more immature than before. And Wendy... still the spoiled little brat she was all those years ago. It had been a while since they had seen the seven Koopa kids, but aside from a few maturing alterations, they hadn't changed a bit since they last saw them.

To be honest, Mario was quite curious as to who their next culprit would be. Had they changed at all? Were they going to put up more of a challenge then their siblings before them? Walking ahead, Mario's thoughts were cut off by the faintest sound of...

Giggling...

Mad giggling...

The voice sounded slightly familiar, but he couldn't put a face to that voice. Luigi stopped dead in his tracks, also taking notice of the random laughing. “Do you hear that, Mario?” he questioned, shaking. Mario just nodded, then grabbed his little brother's sleeve and pulled him along towards the source of the giggling. Just as they were getting closer to the battle room, Mario heard the laughing suddenly stop, and small mumbles replacing it.

“They're coming, Fluffy... Don't worry... We'll make them pay...”

The Mario Bros. finally got to the battle room where they were greeted with a rather unfamiliar face and and regular sized chain chomp staring directly at them. The Koopa smiled maliciously at them.

“Mario... Luigi... So nice to see you again,” he spoke, sending shivers down both their spines. But... what did he mean? 'Nice to see you again'? Surely they had never met before. Mario took a quick glance at the Koopa's features – lime green palm tree-like hair, long, slender body, thick black rimmed glasses... His glasses gave the peculiar illusion that his irises were detached from his pupils, just like...

“....Iggy?” Mario stumped out with wide eyes. The Koopa grinned again.

“Ooh, you remembered my name,” he smirked, giggling again. “How lovely.”

Mario vaguely remembered always calling Iggy by the wrong name, or just plain stating that he forgot it. He could imagine why Iggy would be impressed that Mario finally learned his name after all those years. But... what happened to him? He looked completely different! Acted completely different, too. In the times before, Iggy was downright shy, practically afraid of Mario and Luigi. He was rather intelligent, rigging his castles and airship with a bunch of hazards and contraptions (mainly fire based, which led Mario to believe he was a pyromaniac*). But now... it's like he cracked under all the pressure he was given. Neither brother knew much about Iggy, but they realized it was probably hard for him to live with his siblings who were much more overbearing than he was.

“Iggy, what happened to you?” Mario finally questioned.

“Just a little accident, no biggie.”

Accident... Mario remembered one time when Peach had been kidnapped – she wrote a letter to him saying that something seriously wrong happened at the castle, and she wanted to stay there until the issue was resolved. And when Peach had tried to tell him about it, Mario had pushed the thought aside and told her that they'd talk about it later. Now Mario was starting to regret his decision. He kind of wished he knew what happened to him. Whatever it was, it made a huge impact on Iggy – he was nothing like he was before. Though, he seemed to approve of his change.

“I was ignored, pushed around, considered a mere inconvenience, and nothing more.” Iggy's grin was sickening, almost as if he was planning to murder all who shunned him, and would enjoy every second of it.

Starting with them.

Mario opened his mouth to say something, but he just couldn't think of anything. He could feel Luigi shudder behind him, obviously not taking a liking to the new Iggy. And he certainly didn't blame him.

“And now...” Iggy laughed maniacally. He waved his green gem-topped wand over his head around wildly in a circular motion, producing a bright green fireball just waiting to be shot out.

“Mario!!” He heard Luigi scream in fear. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Kamek snickering, and flying across the room, swinging his magical wand. The dust emitted from it landed on the chain chomp, making it change many colors.

“You'll all pay!!!” His laughing became even more insane. The chain chomp suddenly fell to the effects of the dusts, and grew to an immense size. It growled viciously at the two brothers, and barked rather loudly. In just a few seconds, Luigi's cries were barely audible over Iggy's crazy giggling and the chain chomp's loud growls and barks. Sweat dripped down from Mario's forehead.

For once in his life, he was actually scared of Iggy Koopa.

His legs were stiff, and he felt like he couldn't move from the spot he was standing in. Though, as the giant chain chomp suddenly lunged at them, he found the motivation to move out of the way. Mario landed near the edge of the floor and almost into the pit. He got up onto his feet, but found himself dropping back down to the floor again to dodge the oncoming fireball. As soon as he could, he got up again, and ran away to the other side of the room, avoiding any fireballs being shot at him.

Three hits on Iggy was all Mario needed, then the madness would stop. Three hits, and three hits only. But Iggy's mad giggling and the chase he was on proved hard for him to concentrate. Mario used the springy blocks to bounce himself up to the top level of the arena. He had to be quick before Iggy could manage to actually injure or even kill one of them. As fast as he could, Mario ran over to where Iggy was and dropped down right onto his head. The psychotic Koopa became dazed from the attack, dropping down into his cart, but the chain chomp connected to it became more enraged. With a rather loud growl, it lunged at Mario again without any orders given to it by its owner. It followed him to wherever Mario tried to run, even up on the top level. Though after a few seconds, Iggy sprung up from his cart, once again shooting fireballs from his wand, which happened to be much faster than any of the other kids'.

“You are both going to meet your fate!!” he yelled, a murderous look in his eyes. “I won't lose!!!”

Though, while he was focusing on Mario, Iggy failed to realize Luigi sneaking up on him and hitting him from behind. He yelped in surprise, alarming the chain chomp of his presence. It turned around and started chasing the Mario Bro., who in turn ran the opposite direction as fast as he possibly could. Mario smiled at his faithful brother, then attempted another sneak attack on the dazed Koopaling. Unfortunately, Iggy got out of his spell of vertigo* faster than expected, and spotted him before he could attack. He focused on Mario, shooting fireballs at him like a madman, while his chain chomp followed Luigi, making it harder to hit him. Iggy was determined to make sure that the two plumbers never saw the light of day again, and he was doing a rather good job, too.

Mario maneuvered to the best of his ability over to Iggy, dodging whatever fireball came his way. The chain chomp chased Luigi up to the top level, dragging its owner along with it. Mario wall jumped over to him, keeping right on his tail. This would be close, but Mario was sure he could make it. Jumping up as high as he could, he grabbed a loose vine off the wall and held onto it. He jump-kicked off the wall,and swung towards Iggy, dodging the oncoming fireballs, and let go of the vine, sending him a swift kick to the face. The Koopaling got knocked back, causing himself to lose his balance, and he fell off the edge of the the floor. The magic on the chain chomp finally wore away, and it was suddenly dragged down to the pits below along with Iggy, whom they could both hear giving one last scream.

“NOOOOOO!!!”

Mario breathed heavily as he wiped the sweat off his forehead, watching Iggy fall. He felt a sigh escape his lips, not bothering to look away as Luigi walked over with the same expression on his face. He felt bad for Iggy – what happened to him was unpredictable, unbeknownst to the both of them. All he wanted was a life where people didn't tease or judge him, and just look at what he turned into. Mario had a hard time getting over what once was, and what was now, but he knew it was true.

“Mario, do ya think he'll change back to the way he was before?” Luigi questioned, peering over the pit as well. Mario shook his head sadly. “Will he be alright?”

The question caught Mario off guard, as he didn't think Luigi cared enough about the Koopalings to ask it. But he knew the answer without even thinking. Iggy was still alive – he had to be. He had fallen into a pit of boiling hot lava before and still lived, so a simple fall shouldn't have killed him.

“Yeah, probably.”

*because of all the fire sword things that Iggy's airship level in Super Mario Bros 3 is riddled with, i have reason to believe that Iggy is a friken pyromaniac.

*i believe that Vertigo by Midnight Syndicate would make a kick@$$ theme for Iggy - look it up if you ever have the chance.
