All the same set that was 10 years ago. 3ds max 2008 and Photoshop CS5. These programs are small in size (200-300MB), but they can work with large files. Plus, they can work on a laptop without problems.

i am thinking of beginning to learn 3D modeling,began with zBrush but I am not sure if it is the right soft for character and vehicle design.

In this case, everything is very simple!
If you understand how polygons, vertices and their interrelations are arranged. This can be learned at the first acquaintance with 3d models. Then you will easily work in professional 3D programs like 3ds max.
If it's difficult for you to understand polygons, then your way to zBrush, so to speak, "knead clay" (to work as a sculptor).
For design, you only need a pencil, a sheet, and a lot of fantasy. All the rest is not so important.
