Zanevon Ryke of the Scoth looked toward the castle Hearthside in the distance and knew it was where his path led.

With only his Guardian spirits Rigel and Sirius at his side, Zane had decided to return his father's sword to the Great Hall. Surrendering his father's Nyakil meant surrendering the one weapon that protected him from the demons of night and death. But he had no choice. It was the law.

Zane was not a Knight of the Realm. He had failed the Clannad, the test of Knighthood. The law of the Nyakil said anyone other than a Knight of The Realm caught in possession of the Knight's blade would be punished by death. A Nyakil was a sacred blade; the very symbol of the strength of The Realm.

Zane's father, the King's First Knight and Captain of the Guard, had given Zane the sword before his death on the killing fields during the sack of Breachfille. There, Zane had avenged his father's death by defeating the demon-master incarnate. The battle-lust in him that had caused even the Knights of the Realm to stand aside after that great battle had finally cooled, and though Zane had fled the fields in grief, he now knew he must surrender his father's blade.

Walking into Hearthside, he would be labeled both a hero and an enemy of The Realm. Would the King and the mysterious druid Scathe, newly appointed as the King's counselor, pardon Zane, orphaned son of the First Knight, or would they order him to be hanged?

The fate of The Realm hung in the balance.
