Ok, this might be a little hard to explain, but....

well, tbh.........He's kinda a fusion.
Not exactly on purpose to be stronger, though.

When he was born (he is the youngest out of the three) he was very weak, and the doctors weren't sure if he would survive. They had to keep him alive somehow, because he was liken to Trip and Pel and so if he died, they would die as well. A nurse offered to help by asking if they could fuse him with her son somehow to make him stronger. Both would probably suffer some memory loss, and this was big to Tyler (the kid), but they had to do it to save him, so he agreed.

Later, I thought of a scene where Pel finds a tool that splits fusions in half (maybe like the moon rod in this: youtu.be/YacT5FDp2Xs?t=7m15s ), and when Ty tries to stop an argument between Trip and Pel, Pel accidentally hits him with it, and these two come out. Of course, they do eventually get back together and all, but since it's been a fairly long time since the two were apart, they both get to do some things they haven't done in a while.
