Description Like before I more or less guessed the exposure. Except at least this time I had a way of timing it... Namely Big Ben right behind me. 4 Minutes, more or less a better stab at what I attempted before, although I'd rather it had been a bit lighter. Next time perhaps!

Photo taken with a Minolta SRT-201 using expired Fuji Velvia 100f.

Ahhh I wondered if someone would ever ask. It was an aeroplane, it make a sharp right banking turn towards London City Airport and juuuuuust got into the photo.

another question bout the plane o.o
why does it looks like dotted and not like a curved line?

Ah! Well what you can actually see here is the flashing light on the underside of the jet. Because it is only on very shortly every second or so that's why it's a single dot in an even pattern. Had I had the lens very wide open you might have been able to see the other lights too but in this case only the strongest one can be seen.

This is amazing, and I think you got the exposure just right, as *lamorth-the-seeker said

With these few shots you've also managed to change my impressions of what's possible with Velvia. I've never considered using it for night shots before, now I have something new to try...

Cheers! Personally I'd use 100f or 100 for sure though, 50 is just going to have that massive exposure falloff and go green. I'm quite impressed with this film for long exposure really, even if it colourshifts red at extreme exposures, I happed to like that.

It doesn't need to be lighter, I actually like it the way it is. It being a little on the dark side makes it look more night-time-ish.

Ahh thank you, if anything in this image I would have gone for a little less exposure to stop that building on the left being so bright. I just wish I'd gone during sunset.

you could do an HDR type to get the brightness of the lights to look good against the darkness of the water/sky/buildings etc.

Ah yeah sure, HDR isn't really my thing though, too easy a solution, though maybe not so much with film.

I know, HDR isn't really my thing either. It is too easy a solution.
I like to shoot for the shadows, damn the highlights, but I kind of like the 'blown-out highlights' look.

Aye each sensor and film has its own unique way of interpreting light information and I think it's kind of a shame to remove "flaws" in an attempt to make a perfect image. In particular I like shooting slide film for the highlights to intentionally let the shadows go deep black blocks of nothing and negative film has really nice way of handling the highlights in such a way that they add instead of detract from the photo (as is the case with digital).

That said there are some beautiful HDR images out there.

I agree, I think the "flaws" can be the better part of the image.

With black and white film you have the freedom to shoot for the shadows and develop for the highlights if you know what you're doing. However, with slide film I love the highlight detail so I shoot for that. I haven't shot slide film in a really long time, its not available near me.

Most HDR pictures don't look real to me, but in some cases HDR does work.

Sorry to hear you don't have slide around there, it's the only real colour film I love on 35mm, although I'd shoot Ektar if I couldn't get it. Right now I'm shooting some... Kodachrome! It's just a shame it's so cold right now!

I agree that slide film is the only 'true' color film. You don't get that vibrancy with any color negative film, at least none that I've ever used. I've never shot Kodachrome. The only slide film I've ever used was mostly Fujichrome Velvia, and Kodak E100VS. I liked the look of Velvia, but not the price.
The only place I can think of that sells slide film near me is Ritz Camera in the mall, and they are way over priced, I try not to buy anything from that store. Also, to get it developed I would have to take my chances with walmart or some other chain store. They send it out and 'special' film like black and white and slide films 'require' at least 2 weeks. This is why I haven't been shooting much film lately. Even though I will have to deal with the slow turnaround, I will shoot some film soon enough.

I very much prefer the look and feel of an analog image to digital, but you can't beat the convenience. Digital is too perfect for me.

Aye! I've been spoiled by slide really, after shooting some macro with Velvia and getting the most beautiful colours ever I don't think I could ever go back to print for normal colour, although saying that Ektar is really pretty nice. I have loads of colour film in the fridge though.

Eventually I'll move on from 35mm film to medium format when I can afford it. Though I would like to get a full frame digital one of these days...

I love looking at my old slides. I especially like how you can see the raised detail of what you shot in the emulsion on the back(front?)side of the film.

Medium format is actually about the same price as 35mm and way cheaper than digital, if you exclude the cost of processing.

Mm, yes that's something that digital and print film really cannot match. I was giddy when I got my first mounted slides back.
