Personally the sword doesn't fit well for me, it looks like he scavenged it off some dead ranger and carries it around for the looks, but to use it would be heavy and cumbersome.
I'd probably replace it with a short cutlass, or some polearm to make up for the obvious reach disadvantage. Maybe something inspired by Hussites, who were villagers not accustomed to battle, so they made their own clever methods with what they had at disposal. Sounds like something they have in common with halflings.
