The guards probably not, but given good conditions, some species can grow for quite a time. The only limit can be the ratio of area and volume, causing troubles in thermoregulation, hydratation etc.
Just look at mammals; During the era of dinosaurs, they were all some sort of mice. From there it went to elephants! We never know what auntie Evolution has in store
