Description
Huehuecanauhtlus tiquichensis fue un dinosaurio ornitópodo perteneciente al grupo de los hadrosaurios, siendo un miembro de Hadrosauromorpha, un hadrosaurido primitivo. Fue descubierto a base de 2 ejemplares, de los cuales el holotipo fue el ejemplar IGM 6253 siendo este mas grande en dimensiones y el cual posee una serie de osteopatologias, es decir infecciones en el hueso, mientras que el menor fue el ejemplar IGM 6254. Fueron encontrados en la localidad la Barranca Los Bonetes en el municipio de Tuzantla, Michoacán, con una datación de entre 86,5 a 83.5 millones de años, siendo del Santoniano y descritos en 2012 por Ángel Alejandro Ramírez-Velasco, Mouloud Benammi, Albert Prieto-Márquez, Jesús Alvarado Ortega y René Hernández-Rivera. Habría medido al rededor de 6 metros de largo, una altura de 2,5 metros y un peso de 1,5 toneladas, siendo un dinosaurio de tamaño medio.
El nombre del animal se deriva de la lengua náhuatl "huehuetl" , que significa "antiguo" y "canauhtli" que significa "pato", en referencia a ser una especie mas sureña que sus parientes cercanos: Gilmoreosaurus, Jintasaurus y Tethyshadros, siendo estos de Asia y Europa, de zonas mas al norte en las cuales Huehuecanauhtlus habitó. El nombre específico de la especie: "tiquichensis" en honor al municipio de Tiquicheo, lugar donde se establecieron durante las excabaciones los paleontologos, y donde recibieron muy buena hospitalidad.

Huehuecanauhtlus tiquichensis was an ornithopod dinosaur belonging to the group of hadrosaurs, being a member of Hadrosauromorpha, a primitive hadrosaur. It was discovered based on 2 specimens, of which the holotype was the IGM 6253 specimen, this being the largest in dimensions and which has a series of osteopathologies, that is, infections in the bone, while the smallest was the IGM 6254 specimen. They were found in the Barranca Los Bonetes locality in the municipality of Tuzantla, Michoacán, with a date of between 86.5 to 83.5 million years, being from Santoniano and described in 2012 by Ángel Alejandro Ramírez-Velasco, Mouloud Benammi, Albert Prieto -Márquez, Jesús Alvarado Ortega and René Hernández-Rivera. It would have measured around 6 meters long, a height of 2.5 meters and a weight of 1.5 tons, being a dinosaur of medium size.
The animal's name is derived from the Nahuatl language "huehuetl", which means "ancient" and "canauhtli" which means "duck", in reference to being a species more southern than its close relatives: Gilmoreosaurus, Jintasaurus and Tethyshadros, these being from Asia and Europe, from areas further north in which Huehuecanauhtlus lived. The specific name of the species: "tiquichensis" in honor of the municipality of Tiquicheo, a place where paleontologists settled during the excavations, and where they received very good hospitality.
