I never heard that one before: unable to win wars? *facepalm* Well, there were battles between 55 before Christ and the two world wars, you know...
I hate army and wars and don't care about the "good soldier" thing.But I don't like history (my sudies) to be distort.
Napoleon did not only loose at Trafalgar and Waterloo, he won at Austerlitz,for instance.
William the Conqueror was the only guy who managed to take England, that's it? By the way his name was Guillaume le Conquérant.
And less known: in middle age Battle of Agincourt was loose, but the Orleans one was won.It was Joan of Arc time, she isn't a surrending exemple.
And Marignan (Italia)one was won, Valmy (Germany) one too...
American Revolution was won....wait, with the help of french army isn't it?
WWI was nearly lost? If my great grandpa heared you! O_O After those four years of resistance, WWII surrending killed -literally- him of heart breaking.
And even after WWII,surrending was refused by some. The fight go on with de Gaulle...or my grandpa.He escaped and join british army, fighting with british uniform.Such secret french armies were know as FFL or FFI.(Thanks to them, France was included in "winners camp" at the armistice)And I do not mention La Resistance.
So next time, learn carefully your history before, young man.It don't start in 1900.

When it comes to successful French military leaders, the big one of course is Charlemagne. He defeated the Saxons, the Avars, the Lombards, and the Moors in battle. And since you stated you don't like war, I'll mention that there are a lot of non-martial things to like about him too; Charlemagne founded the Holy Roman Empire (the first Western European Empire since the 476) and brought about a flourishing of art and culture in the Carolingian Renaissance. There's good reason why he's known as Pater Europae.

hello, I'm french myself (I have a big back father who made the WW1 and the rest in another war except WW2) and it is true that the U.S. government was led to believe that the French are not zero when wanted to go to Iraq is the simple reason. They are not happy then do it the wrong thing to believe American gullible as our nuclear testing in the Pacific. And for those who think that France is zero at war must know that the countries that have won the highest number of conflict in Europe. A thank you to our English friends who have defended us

During the Napoleonic wars France was considered a nation to be reckoned with. Since they had a genius leader, declaring war on them could lead to your capitol being burnt or annexed over the course of 2 to 3 months.

Quite right, Lady Knight. Too many people make fun of the French military, but I assure you, us in the UK who actually have an ounce of historical knowledge realise the tremendous heritage of the French military, and respect you for being our oldest enemy, and today one of our closest friends.

I agree with everything you said except for one thing, WWII.
I consider the French irredeemable just because of what they did to their poor Moroccan and other colonial troops. So no, not surrender jockeys or anything. Just abuse of their colonial troops.

Are these people forgetting their history? COME ON! As a history geek I feel people should think before they do something like that. Over here in the US we have these politicians who make these claims about history and have no evidence to back it up. Sorry if I'm ranting here but there are some who say that no matter what you were. You were free to be a citizen. OK then what about the discrimination of African Americans or using them as slaves until the late 1800's? The discrimination of Irish immigrants with plenty of the Irish faced with sings saying," No Irish Need Apply," or even preventing them from practicing their religion, It was awful, Native supremacy treatment of Irish Catholics, German Catholics, had churches burned down and were discriminated from society. Oh let's not forget the Chinese exclusion act that was around for over 60 years since its creation preventing Chinese immigrants from entering the US. Like I said, I'm a history geek so I want history to be respected. BTW your Grandfather was a WW2 soldier? So was mine.

That's cool, BTW also as a hetalia fan I even found out why Italy is the surrender monkey in the show. It's mainly a reference that the Italian's just didn't surrender once during WW2 but TWICE! It was mainly because the Italians were getting tired of fighting and wanted to quit. As a result the people elected a new government that arrested Mussolini and surrendered to the Allies. However, Mussolini escaped and took control again for a short amount of time resuming fighting with the Germans. Eventually he was captured by the new government again and executed him. After that they surrendered again and this time they actually joined the Allies. *I researched this* I'm half Italian and I was interested why he does that.

Actually there are two Italy's in the show b/c North Italy was controlled by many other countries of Europe. While South Italy was controlled by Spain. Little cool thing about my Grandfather is that when he was in WW2 he dated this German girl who actually turned out to be a spy. However, she was found out and was killed. Which brings up another interesting point. In episode 14 of the series France sees through Germany's disguise after he mashes his potatoes before eating them. *It was said that Germans do that before eating potatoes. Where it's said in France that they cut them into smaller pieces. I got this from the show and knowing that you're from France I don't know if that's really how the French eat potatoes.* That actually happened in ww2 when a German spy was at a restaurant in France ordering potatoes and was spotted when he mashed them before eating them. Then there was another time during ww1 when another German spy was caught over here in the US. Bottom line Germans suck at spying.
