When it comes to successful French military leaders, the big one of course is Charlemagne. He defeated the Saxons, the Avars, the Lombards, and the Moors in battle. And since you stated you don't like war, I'll mention that there are a lot of non-martial things to like about him too; Charlemagne founded the Holy Roman Empire (the first Western European Empire since the 476) and brought about a flourishing of art and culture in the Carolingian Renaissance. There's good reason why he's known as Pater Europae.

There have been 53 major wars in Europe
France had been a belligerent in 49 of them; UK 43.
In 185 battles that France had fought over the past 800 years, their armies had won 132 times, lost 43 times and drawn only 10.
Giving the French military the best record of any country in Europe.

J'en ai marre de ces gens qui condamne tout un peuple a cause des choix de leur dirigeants.

During the Napoleonic wars France was considered a nation to be reckoned with. Since they had a genius leader, declaring war on them could lead to your capitol being burnt or annexed over the course of 2 to 3 months.

Quite right, Lady Knight. Too many people make fun of the French military, but I assure you, us in the UK who actually have an ounce of historical knowledge realise the tremendous heritage of the French military, and respect you for being our oldest enemy, and today one of our closest friends.
I've even tried to educate my own watchers. Most of them listen, I'm happy to say: willsormiston.deviantart.com/j…

Another great antonym to the whole French-surrender-monkey thing:Charlemagne, father of Europe, the first Holy Roman Empire, subduer of the Saxons and Bavarians...

It is discussed if he was French or German (I think both). Whatever, him or a Napoleon: how would a complete coward conquer nearly all Europe? By asking politely? I don't think so....^^

Les américains trouvent notre armée faible, mais on verra bien comment se débrouillera la leur le jour où ils feront enfin la guerre sur leur propre territoire.

I agree with everything you said except for one thing, WWII.
I consider the French irredeemable just because of what they did to their poor Moroccan and other colonial troops. So no, not surrender jockeys or anything. Just abuse of their colonial troops.

Let's not forget that during the French revolution, France fought off multiple other countries.
I'm not French but I hate this stereotype so much.

Of course, but for a french it was less evident(the fact he was in the -then french-north africa where germans arrived much later helped him, tough). And I'm a history geek too.

That's cool, BTW also as a hetalia fan I even found out why Italy is the surrender monkey in the show. It's mainly a reference that the Italian's just didn't surrender once during WW2 but TWICE! It was mainly because the Italians were getting tired of fighting and wanted to quit. As a result the people elected a new government that arrested Mussolini and surrendered to the Allies. However, Mussolini escaped and took control again for a short amount of time resuming fighting with the Germans. Eventually he was captured by the new government again and executed him. After that they surrendered again and this time they actually joined the Allies. *I researched this* I'm half Italian and I was interested why he does that.

My great grandparents were Italians .I like Hetalia too, I suppose that's the reason why there's two Italy (the one who join the allies and the mussolinian one)
