Description Part two

Um. I know I'm not good enough to make a proper tutorial, but hopefully this'll stop you making the errors I did!!

Mkay, I am definitely NOT saying that drawing in an anime or cartoon style is wrong. I love artists like *elsevilla . However, if you are serious about drawing, you should not pick up a How to Draw Manga book straight away and learn from that. It's important to know how anatomy works BEFORE you start drawing in a non-realistic manner, or when you draw a person they won't look right. I know in anime the characters are very stylised, but the designers and animators would have studied human anatomy thoroughly before they would have been allowed anywhere NEAR the studio. Practice makes perfect and all those cliches

Oh, and if you actually find this helpful, I'm so glad!

Remember, this is just the way I draw, and it works for me. You need to know basic anatomy before you distort it! This tutorial-like thingy is full of suggestions, not rules.
You can see my progression here.

With the blushing; doesn't real blushing actually make the entire face red not just the cheeks? So it would kinda be more realistic to make the entire face go redder instead of just the cheeks?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lady-leliel In reply to LordAuthor [2015-12-10 23:27:45 +0000 UTC]

that's true!! blood rushes mostly to the cheeks (and ears) though, and when women wear 'blush' make-up it's usually just on the cheeks so I kept it to that XD An entirely red face in a drawing might be kinda cute, though..

I always though that the nose that point upwards in the second example might belong to a pig species, despite that I also did that mistake XD.
Some manga artists (even professionals) draw piggy noses.

I just hate the side mouth.

hahahahahaha, yes! it does look a bit piggy XDDD i think some manga styles it can work but for people just learning to draw, they should practice realistic first

the side mouth is pretty funny to see >_<

Profiles. Noses. How.
These two kill me every time. I don't go over-the-top on the big eyes or non-existent chins, and I'm getting better with the big foreheads. But the nose. I just can't.
This is gonna keep me going for a while. Thank you.

Omg you just taught me how to draw profiles correctly!! Just wanna thank you for taking the time to make this and sharing your tips with everyone. There could have been a thousand other things you could be doing but you chose to share some of the things that you learned with other so they can improve too. It makes me really happy when artists do that and one of the reasons why I love a community like DA so much~

Sorry for the long and sappy comment, just wanted you to know how I felt...

Hmm I have a feeling that this is more of a "how to draw perfect anime girls and boys" .. Which is ofc nothing bad.
But you can give an OC big eyes or a thin neck or maybe huge ears and a big whippy nose.
It's all about symmetry and proportions that are in balance with eachother. If you look at the movie "up" for an example, that old man is far far faaar away from the 'normal' proportions, yet everybody recognizes him as an old man with proper anatomy.. It's all about can you make it work/look good or not? I love how you point out that you need guidelines, because you DO need them for every style, wherever it's manga or disney, realism etc.. But if you got the guidelines right, you can make everything like you want it!

Anyway, I understood that this is a tutorial for the manga style, which doesn't have much room for creativity when it comes to body/face proportions (No that's not an insult to all the manga fans out there! xD Just a simple fact, nothing wrong with it, it's not a bad art style!). In manga there are way more 'standards' that all the characters have, so you did a good job on this tutorial, congrats!

P.S. Excuse me for my English, it's not my mother tongue xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lady-leliel In reply to Emmerd [2012-09-11 08:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah, no- this is for people with little or no experience with drawing who straight away reach for the 'How to Draw Manga' books and learn from them instead of a proper source. I did that and I really regret it because for years I had an awful manga-ish style and I don't want others to make my mistake When they try to draw people before knowing what they really look like they just won't look right. It's very important to know the basics first, and practice a lot BEFORE drawing in a style you want I still like to draw cartoons and people with funny proportions but I am far better at it now than I was a few years back because I studied photos of people so I have a basic knowledge of how they bend and the body proportions. Does it make sense? XD Like, the animators who made Up would have studied from life at university before they designed the man and kid. If someone with no training tried to draw a cartoon old man it would look pretty bad

Your English is a lot better than a lot of people who speak it as a first language, so well done XD

Depends on style

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lady-leliel In reply to Usagi-Himeko [2012-09-11 02:53:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but this is for beginners who rush straight into manga styles and as a result don't get their anatomy right! I think you should learn this before attempting style. Because I reaaally regret it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Usagi-Himeko In reply to lady-leliel [2012-09-11 04:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, you could have referred this where to start to draw instead, since you just told everyone that anime style drawing is wrong, since logically there's no really right or wrong in drawing.

You should have also encouraged people to start with realism before heading on to anime style instead There's a lot of beautiful artworks out there that doesn't necessarily follow realism entirely.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lady-leliel In reply to Usagi-Himeko [2012-09-11 08:55:51 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, there are lots of artists with a manga style that's I love (check out *elsevilla as an example) but if someone who has just started drawing from 'How to Draw Manga' tries to draw a person they won't look accurate. If that person looks at lots of photos of real bodies and practices drawing realistic faces first, they'll get better a lot faster, and THEN they will develop their own style, manga, cartoon or realistic.

Your second paragraph sums up what I am trying to do XDDD
