First of all, the screenshots are directly from the anime because I am lazy as *@&# and didn't want to redraw it all. So no credit for me there..I guess the vast majority of my watchers won't get this, but there's this one scene in Evangelion that literally stays the same for a good 2 minutes while they play classical music. XDDD

Don't get me wrong, I may be a hardcore fanboy of Hideaki Anno's anime, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's manga and the Rebuild movie franchise; nevertheless I am critical of all my movies and comics [an example being that I don't like Sadamoto's take on Kaworu]. I called this sequence genius because they needed to have the episode be a certain length of time and maintaining a still frame accomplishes the task of extending an episode's length without the cost of filling said space with animation. So from the perspective of not exceeding the budget it made perfect sense.Β Secondly, the still frame being Shinji's choice. Kaworu's betrayal was already fairly heartbreaking, the only unconditional love and affection this child ever received was from the enemy... and now not only does he have to kill him if he wants to survive, but the enemy loved him so much that he'd rather die than kill him and so begged him to kill him. It serves as a tension builder until the inevitable act... so from the rule of drama perspective it also receives a thumbs up... Plus Kaworu wouldn't make such a good Christ-God parallel if he didn't die for his love for the Lilim.

yeah, i love the original series and rebuild and manga too haha. not a fan of the newer spin off manga, though. all fanservice, too AU, not enough plot to keep me interested.. but that's going off on a tangent
that's true it's hella dramatic!! one of the most dramatic pauses in the history of everything haha. i appreciate they used it but they could've shaved off a FEW seconds, because i always tend to get distracted at that part

The first time i watched it,i was saying "dont kill him dont kill him dont kill him" and i was waiting for something to happen and then suddenly the thing happened and i cried and that was before i actually started liking the characters and stuff,nice comic! And that sistting pose....xD

The first two are available on DVD in English and Japanese, even in my small country XD They were sooo good, well- the second one was amazing. The first one was basically a recap of the first few episodes but in higher quality and re-drawn. The second introduces a new character with her new Eva AND a new Angel ^_^

XD I didn't mind the dub in the original series (though I kept the subs up since they had the literal translation), but I prefer the new movies in Japanese..

I just dislike Shinji dub voice. Spike Spencer tries his voice sound like a whimp type of guy and his voice crack at times, he also says he dislike doing Shinji's role. I like the Jap better even though Shinji sound like a girl. At least he sounds cute, his screams from EOE is more intense than the dub, and his Jap voice actress sing Shinji's version of the op song. Megumi Ogata FTW!

Don't forget the scene with Asuka and Rei in the elevator. They're standing there, not speaking with the sound of the elevator moving in the background for about as long. I thought the file was broken. xD

What watchers of the TV series do not realize now is that when the show was in production (but before it aired in 1995), the Tokyo subway bombing occurred, which literally shook the entire nation emotionally and financially for weeks. (This could be compared to America's reaction to Sept 11, 2011, though without as large a global fallout.) Production on the show was significantly stalled, and many scenes were not completed as planned. This is most obvious- as you humorously point out here- around Episodes 16-18. You'll notice around the time of 's appearance that there was an increasing frequency of long-pause shots scattered throughout the remainder of the series.
While, yes, there were long-pause shots before this (example: Shinji staring at Misato in the train station at the end of Episode 4), they were intentionally placed there for artistic and dramatic purposes. But in the latter-half of the series, the pauses were to compensate for the lack of material coming out of the studio at the time.

Ahh. I didn't know! I did know the show didn't have as large a budget as it deserved, and noticed the frequent stills and cutting of quality- another example I find quite funny is when Rei briefs Shinji on their next mission whilst carefully holding the small book over her mouth XD but I didn't actually notice the increase after Zeruel. I'll be watching more closely the next time I decide to rewatch the series!
I suppose they were used in an artistic manner too, but some of the scenes dragged on so long it was pretty funny
I love the new remakes that have been coming out now, the animation looks so smooth

It's been so long since I watched the series, and I am not aware of where exactly they were in production, but I do know it was about the half-way point of the series, so it's somewhere around Ep. 14-16.
