Wow. Nature has created a new masterwork for us to wonder about.

You've made a very good photo of it.

Well, I'll be.Β  I have never seen such a thing before.Β  I see this is in a preserve but when the tree dies this would be worth saving.Β  Trippy.Β  I suspect the heart of these two branches rotted and the outer wood kept growing into a curl.Β  Someone has cut this so maybe the preserve takes care of sick trees?

You got it! Apparently even if part of a tree decays, the rest keeps growing, and may even grow inward. Sort of a way of repairing itself or supporting itself to make up for the decayed part. I don't know how long ago that may have been cut. It may have been done when the land was still private property, or perhaps after storm damage, or, as you suggest, due to disease. At any rate, it looks cool!

I think it would make a superior frame for somethingΒ  In two inch slices there would be more than enough.Β  Hypothetically, of course.Β  I like anomalies like this.Β  Here is a windmill blade that wound up in a tree after the 1919 hurricane flattened this area. Β  farm5.staticflickr.com/4130/48… Hurricane Harvey did nothing as interesting as this.Β  This is Rockport, Texas (actually Fulton, the same town with different post offices).Β

I can only imagine what that tree would look like if it had not been cut like that.

Interesting, certainly. I wonder what made it grow that way.
