Well it's an east asian myth. They say the Gods would tie red strings to the ANKLES of two people who are destined to be lovers. The Japanese pop culture changed it to be tied on the hand or around a finger.

The red string is a string of fate, one end is wrapped around your finger or hand and the other end is wrapped around your destined lover's hand (or finger). We can't see the red string and it can't be cut, ripped, or broken, but it can stretch forever.
