Life in the Dark side

3/6/13

The island is filled with grey skies and the weather is unusually cold. This wasn’t typical weather for Honolulu, Hawaii, but it didn’t matter to Sam McNeil. Sam dreaded waking up every morning in the dark. Being able to smell, hear, taste and touch was pleasing to an extent. Sam wanted to be able to see his mother, wanted to see his wife and just wanted to see his photos he took over the course of his life. The camera he stood outside his home for at least four hours to get the perfect shot.

Sam was a young twenty-two year old who wanted to travel the world with his photos. He wanted to visit the busy streets of New York and visit the white house in the historical Washington D.C. Sam wanted to do things with his life, but life didn’t allow him to. Instead he was trapped in his room with the feelings of depression and anger. He constantly had to hear his mother prepare dinner with the slamming of pots and pans. The stirring of wooden spoons and the cutting of vegetables.

Suddenly his door began to open and was closed gently as they entered. Sam knew it was his wife coming to clean up his room like she did every Saturday afternoon. She began to shuffle papers and fold laundry as he just sat in his desk chair. He hated his wife for being able to see and pretending that she was doing something right. He felt she only loved him to brag about how she was dating a blind man so everyone could see her as inspirational.

“Why do you even bother anymore?” said Sam in a harsh voice.

His wife stopped and began to walk toward his bed.  Every time she stepped on the floor boards, they let out a chilling creak sound. Sam despised this sound because it reminded him of his childhood. As a child Sam always stepped on the worn out floorboards because he could never find his way around his house. One floorboard in particular has a rusted nail sticking out of it, in which Sam would always get his sock caught in the nail and go crashing into the floor. Sam waited to hear his wife firmly sit on his bed for him to concentrate.

He heard his wife inhale, ready to spew the same nonsense she always did to Sam.

“Before you spout the same crap to me, I have had it, I am sick of this. I can’t even see you, who did I marry? Did I marry a fat women or a skinny woman?  An ugly one or a supermodel, who are you! Look, I am sick of this, I am sick of you and sick of this damn curse!”

Sam was so enraged; spit went flying out of his mouth as he began to yell. He heard his wife quickly exit his room and wail in the kitchen. Sam’s mother dropped everything she was cooking to comfort Sam’s wife. Sam felt horribly for screaming at his wife, but what other option did he have, but scream. That was the only way he thought people would treat him normally

Sam suddenly lost hope in himself; he could never see his pictures or never actually see the beauties of this Earth. Sam lifted himself from his chair and felt his path to his drawer. He opened the top drawer and again was in search for what he was looking for. Sam finally found his leather belt and slowly wrapped the belt around his neck. His curse would be lifted from him and he would be comfortable alone buried into the Earth.

Sam began to wrap the belt around his neck even more, the belt felt like a python squeezing the life out of him. Sam suddenly shook in fear; pictures began to flash in his mind. He saw everyone’s face and he saw himself taking pictures and how truly wonderful they were. Sam pictured his wife; she was full of life and beautiful. Sam quickly unwrapped himself from the belt and threw it across the room.

Pictures were flashing in his mind like his camera. Sam began to laugh and he had never felt so relieved and overjoyed even. Sam realized he needed to apologize to his wife as well as everyone else he ever offended. As Sam opened his bedroom door, he tripped over the rusted like he did as a child and fell on the cold wooden floors of his parent’s house. Sam began to laugh at himself and realized, despite being blind he came achieve his dreams.

The path may not be clear, but then again; life always has its blind spots.
