What's This?

This new article is an extension of my Seven at Seven initiative. If you are like me, you get frustrated browsing for DeviantART news and discovering nothing but miscats. So, with this article, it is my hope to shed new light on the differences between DEVIATIONS and JOURNALS and how to post them. With introductions out of the way, lets start with --

A News Refresher: What to Avoid

We'll use Literature again as the primary example, since I see this occurring far too often in this particular category. As previously stated, anything of a personal nature that does not relate to Literature does not belong in the journal Literature Feature category. These non-literature journals definitely include memes and/or any random blurbs about subjects that exclude Literature mentions or any features of Literature. Perhaps the most important factor to remember before you submit: prose or poetry produced here on DeviantART written by YOU is NOT considered a literature feature journal, these are deviations. The same rule apples to traditional art features. Please always pay attention to where you are posting. If it is strictly a personal journal, please post it as “personal.” If it is a journal entry that features other articles or deviations that are not your own, post it as "Art / Literature feature." That said, I am providing a visual below to show deviants the common plight I am referring to.

TODAY'S COMMUNITY NEWS:

If you look closely, two "news articles" are different than the others. For those who have posted informative articles on DeviantART in the past, you may have noticed right away that two of these do not belong here. It is because the journals in question are not considered news, these are literature deviations. They do not belong in news. This is an easy enough mistake to make, especially if new to the website, and if you are unfamiliar with how the sta.sh submission function works. Below, I hope to highlight how to submit each for those who may be confused about the process.

How Do I Submit Artwork or Literature Via Sta.sh?

Below, I have provided a step-by-step process on how to add new DEVIATIONS to your DeviantART gallery.

Click on the brown portrait: SUBMIT ART.

You have TWO options here: UPLOAD ART or ENTER TEXT FOR NEW LITERATURE.

Literature YOU compose goes in the TEXT BOX below.

After you click "OK," this is how your finished DEVIATION will appear.

Now, select the CORRECT CATEGORY for your DEVIATION. (In this case, Literature.) Be sure to follow all of the prompts!

Choose your options and click SUBMIT NOW.

How Do I Submit A Journal Via Sta.sh?

Below, I have provided a step-by-step process on how to add new PERSONAL JOURNALS AND NEWS ARTICLES to your DeviantART gallery.

You have TWO options for JOURNALS: You can click on WRITE A JOURNAL ENTRY or simply click STA.SH. I will be using STA.SH.

For JOURNALS ONLY you will click on COMPOSE IN STA.SH WRITER.

Your blank template will appear to enter your JOURNAL title and text.

Add any personal flare you like, including HTML and CSS. For CSS options, click on CHANGE SKIN.

Below is an example of a PERSONAL JOURNAL posted via STA.SH.

Below is an example of a CORRECT JOURNAL NEWS ARTICLE posted under LITERATURE FEATURES.

Below is an example of a CORRECT JOURNAL NEWS ARTICLE posted under ART FEATURES.

After you are finished editing your JOURNAL, click the YELLOW DONE BUTTON (You can customize the journal at any time.)

DeviantART will then prompt you for a SUBMIT tab.

For all PERSONAL JOURNAL ENTRIES you will select JOURNAL PORTAL and then click PERSONAL.

For all LITERATURE NEWS RELATED JOURNAL ENTRIES you will select JOURNAL PORTAL and then click LITERATURE FEATURES.

For all ARTWORK NEWS RELATED JOURNAL ENTRIES you will select JOURNAL PORTAL and then click ART FEATURES.

Make sure you fill out your remaining OPTIONS and preferences.

After you finish CHECK MARKING all SETTINGS, click SUBMIT NOW.

Thank You for Reading and Supporting!

I hope you this tutorial has helped you. If you have any questions, I am always happy to assist you in any way I can.

With love,
LadyLincoln

Hi! Nice tutorial.

I have a bit of a problem and I am not sure if anything can be done about it but I was submitting a drawing of an OC and I was in the process of writing down her bio in the description when the page suddenly refreshed and when the submission-page came back, all the things that I had written down had been erased. This was at least an hour of writing (what? It was an extensive bio for an important character).

Is there a way to get that back or will I have write everything down all over again?

I am glad you found it helpful, dearheart.

In my experience, unless you submit your deviation directly through the sta.sh tool, and it auto saves your progress, there is not a way to retrieve it. However, if you look through your drafts via sta.sh, the file(s) might still be floating about.

Hope this helps,

Cool, but hey is there a way to turn Journals into literatures?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyLincoln In reply to Fatefulbrawl [2018-01-02 03:12:00 +0000 UTC]

Journals are meant to be separate entities.

Literature should be posted as deviations, not journals. Journals should be used for news articles/features for other artists and/or personal content only.

I have a problem.

The literature I'me trying to submit as a deviation includes images. I want to submit it as a deviation, but it will only let submit it as a journal. If I use the "enter text" option, the images won't show up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyLincoln In reply to MaximumDisrespect [2017-10-24 21:02:59 +0000 UTC]

Hello,

You can add an image after you (pre)submit your deviation.

This step takes place after you click on the "submit to DA" button. After you are on the first submission screen before you click the finalized "submit now," button, you will see a tiny pencil icon on the upper right corner on the deviation box - click on it and you will see the two main options: "edit text" and "change preview image." Click on "change preview image" and go from there.

Also, if you are adding/using a preview image, be sure to credit it properly.

Hope this helps,

It does not help matters when DeviantART overcomplicates everything, making it difficult for new members to adjust.

Question: I tried to submit a literature to one of my art folders but it was submitted to the Journal instead. Do you know if they changed that "Literature" now is automatically submitted into journals section?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyLincoln In reply to Night-Class [2017-05-14 21:52:06 +0000 UTC]

It is only submitted as a journal when you click on: "journal portal" and then follow the prompts, i.e: personal, art features, etc. When you click on "Literature," then you will prompted for the correct categories such as: poetry, prose, and so forth. There is a difference. Hope this helps!

Literature under prose / horror would work, too. Whenever I think OCs, I tend to think characters from books and TV.

For all ARTWORK NEWS RELATED JOURNAL ENTRIES you will select JOURNAL PORTAL and then click ART FEATURES. And mixed features. I have a lot of those, so I just use the tags field to indicate that it also has lit in it (#litfeature , #literaturefeature ) and submit to the Art Features category.

There is also something worth noting: you can move a lit piece to journals, but you can't move a journal piece to lit. This is something that I actually filed a help desk ticket on a while back, and damphyr had to break the bad news to me; I'd submitted a lit piece as a journal because that was in the contest requirements. I don't want to resubmit as a lit piece because then it's a double submission - I don't want to delete the journal because it helps verify a copyright date in the event I should ever need to do so. (Also, comments. )

Very nicely done, and I will happily spread the word as I'm browsing through and find such things.

Good point, dearheart.

I know deviants can submit literature deviations under the journal category to add skins and the like, but I feel submitting this way is where the initial confusion lies. Far too many deviants are submitting personal content, random lists, generic memes and their own literature works under "Journals / Literature features." I know many think that "literature features" mean to include their work, but unfortunately, this is not the case. It is frustrating when content of a non-news related nature shows up on the today's page news footer; like today for example. (I'm pretty sure "I'm Dating Someone" is NOT DeviantART related news.) This irks me to no end when it takes the spotlight away from other deviants submitting their current news and art features on site.

Thank you for helping me spread the word, lovely!
